I don't want to turn him into a victim though. He himself bears the majority of the blame for sticking around if he really can't do the job. Obama and Jill are probably the only ones who could talk him into stepping down and one, at this point, Jill seems like she's a bit in fantasyland herself. And two, even Obama might not be able to talk hm into standing down. But I certainly can't see him dropping out because Tom Friedman writes a "sorrowful" column about it.
It's a total shitshow for the Ds and it's totally their own creation including the god-awful Harris as VP. And when I say "their own creation" -- I'm referring to the reliably D institutions. I think the D voters would have tossed him in the primaries if they knew the truth -- but they weren't given the truth by the folks they listent to. They ain't takin' Jim Geraghy's word for it. Heh.
Whereas with the Rs, it's the R voters more than the "party" that keep DJT in this fiasco.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

I honestly haven't seen even a clip from last night but I read that he even fucked up on abortion, the one issue Dems have a clear advantage on. He started by talking about a woman killed by an illegal immigrant....?!
And honestly from what I've read it seems like Trump actually learned a lesson from 2020 to stand aside and let Biden self-immolate instead of constantly interrupting. Although maybe the format did him a favor by not allowing interruptions.

DJT, I think, was actually the good version of whatever he is -- he was near his ceiling. I mean, he is what he is, but he can be way worse.

Remember when Ds were so fucking irate about Special Prosecutor Hur taking pains to point out that he couldn't possibly convict The Chairman because the jury would see him as a doddering old man? I remember that.
And The Chairman and his people are still fighting tooth and nail to keep the video of that deposition from going public.
Again -- the gaslighting on this issue from the Left -- not even the Left -- from D institutions -- it's been astounding.
Mike and I aren't one lick surprised by where The Chairman is.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

And I will say -- there are Ds that were paying attention and knew this shit was bad. My wife was terrified of last night because she thought he was incapable of performing. She didn't watch, but she now has more than 0% hope that they might replace him.
I think DSL -- Eagle Biden and all -- heh -- has known for a long time that he's at least on the margins of fit.
What's shocking to me is the number of people who were actually surprised by last night's astounding debacle. I mean, like legitimately shocked. It's one thing to say -- "ok, I knew he was terrible, but that's even more terrible than I expected" -- it's another to be like "OMFG...he's a stammering yahoo!"Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

To beat Trump a Democrat just has to be competent, non-threatening, and promise "normalcy". Those were strengths as I saw them for Biden in 2020. Well the normalcy thing is now shaky and the competency angle is completely gone.
The goddamn 22nd Amendment continues to haunt us. Without it Obama coasts to a 3rd term and the names "President Trump" and "President Biden" only appear in Harry Turtledove alternative histories.

I get 2020. But, at some point, it became obvious to a lot of people that he was teetering on competent/fitness. Awhile ago. If, e.g., the NYT or WaPo had laid the groundwork with stories on his unfitness much earlier then it would have been possible for some other D to actually challenge him. There would have been a "need" and the D could have said that he/she is just coming to the rescue or whatever. What that D cannot do, however, is just challenge out of the blue and go against the orthodoxy that The Chairman is just fine. In fact, not just fine -- vigorous.
I love, love, love seeing the Ds hoisted on their own petard by the shit about them that sticks in my craw, but I have hard time fully enjoying it because it consequences are DJT instead of, say, any other fucking R.Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]?

And, yes, Trump finally heeded the wise advice to maintain composure and provide Biden the opportunity to shit the bed. Honestly, if he had done that in 2020 and didn't cancel the other debates he probably would have won.
Policy discussion aside, Trump hit Biden with some pretty good haymakers. "I don't know what he said at the end there and I don't think he does either." There's not an honest observer in the country that doesn't think "SAME".

I could be wrong but I think this is the first time he has been a disaster at a major event? He's never been great but all-out disaster? Weird moments in a daily press conference or some campaign stop in Wisconsin you can brush off, but not an event watched by millions live like the debates or a SOTU.

They're fucked. The ship has sailed and the SS Biden is headed for the ice berg. 99% of D delegates are already pledged to Biden and there is no mechanism to reverse that. I'm pretty sure that if he steps aside, Harris becomes the nominee but I'm not entirely sure. One thing is certain: It's too late to nominate a different candidate. It's either Biden or Harris and they are proper fucked either way.
