  • While perusing stories of D-Day glory yesterday I was reminded of Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (Teddy's son) who led the American landing at Utah Beach. He was 56 years old and used a cane to walk due to an aortic thrombosis. Their landing craft were swept over a mile south of their intended target due to strong currents that morning. He, along with a Company Commander, were among the first men off the boat at Utah Beach and went ashore with the aid of his cane and holding a pistol. Once he got his bearings and realized they were significantly off course, he declared "We'll start the war from right here!" His son was among the first waves of troops to hit Omaha Beach that same morning.

Gen. Roosevelt survived D-Day and died of a heart attack as a result of the thrombosis on July 12, 1944 in Sainte-Mère-Église, France. Among his pallbearers were Gen. Omar Bradley and Gen. Patton who called Roosevelt the bravest man he ever knew. Gen. Roosevelt was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Interspersed with news clips of centenarians revisiting the Normandy Beaches on the news last night there was story of Hallie Biden testifying that the current president's son had "Crack rocks the size of ping pong balls". I found the juxtaposition funny.

    • It's nice to feel a subtle shift in the tone of the news. As we've discussed, the news is presented through the filter of the progressive left - as Talent has remarked, "it hates America." Last night ABC's News with David Muir spent almost the entire broadcast honoring the soldiers that crossed the beach at Normandy to liberate Europe from the Nazi's. It was nice to see stories of young people embracing these soldier survivors in attendance at the D Day ceremonies and telling them, "they changed the course of history." By Sunday, we'll be back in the hope America fails mode. It is such a shitty place.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

      • NBC had a couple of nice features as well. One was about an Irish woman who worked as a meteorologist in Western Ireland, the westernmost part of Europe. The weather in that region moves in from the west so that information provided a preview of what conditions in the channel would be the next morning. Not knowing it at the time, Eisenhower and his staff were dissecting her barometric data and it played a crucial role in them delaying the invasion from June 5th to the 6th. She didn't find out about it until 1956 and died late last year at 100.

Of course, the Allies killed roughly 30,000 French civillians as part of overall D-Day operations. But, back then we sort of understood that there was always a cost to war and that the question was really only whether the potential benefit was worth it. That's why no one cares about the dead French. The Germans were so incontrovertibly evil, the costs were justified.

What's horrific, IMO, is that folks don't see Hamas as incontrovertibly evil. But rather -- those college kids would look at Hamas and the United States and say the US is the evil one. And don't even throw Israel into the equation.

It's rather astonishing that the Alphabet types haven't rioted over losing a full day's worth of attention in the middle of Pride Month.
