California enjoyed record surpluses during Covid (propped up by federal assistance). Now that reality has reared its ugly head, it appears that chasing off businesses and tax paying citizens while expanding services to non-contributors is blowing a massive hole in the state budget. Weird.The Legislative Analyst’s Office projects the 2024-25 shortfall at $73 billion, putting more pressure on legislators and the governor to find savings.Comment

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell told reporters in Arizona that she's ordered her staff not to cooperate in any efforts to send Raad Noan Almansoori, 26, back to New York where he's wanted in connection to the slaying of Denisse Oleas-Arancibia, 38.Almansoori is being held without bail in Arizona, where he's been accused of stabbing two women.
"Having observed the treatment of violent criminals in the New York area by the Manhattan DA there, Alvin Bragg," Mitchell said, "I think it's safer to keep him here and keep him in custody so that he cannot be out doing this to individuals either in our state, county or anywhere in the United States."

The effort to eliminate officers from schools has been a priority for progressives and racial-justice activists, who contend that black students and students with disabilities are disproportionately policed and disciplined by in-school officers. It also comes after at least four students were killed in three shootings near Chicago schools in recent weeks...
Last year, four students were shot — two of them fatally — at Benito Juarez High School. The school’s leaders had previously voted to remove officers from the building, Vallas noted.
