The Ukrainian counter-offensive has begun and has been ongoing since June 4th. There are 3-4 attack axis: The southern limits of Ukrainian control of the Zaphorizia Oblast contains 2 of them. The other two are in the direction of Bakhmut and north of that through Kupiansk. ISW reports with varying results. Ukrainian forces are advancing to the east on the flanks of Russian held city of Bakhmut. Russia's MoD claims to have "repelled" Ukrainian forces trying to penetrate Russian defensive positions on one of the two attack axis within the Zaphorizia Oblast.

In some of the most detailed analysis compared to previous ones, ISW lays out the Russian defensive doctrine of layered positions. The first layer was reportedly penetrated by Ukrainian forces with Russian forces retreating to the second and 3rd layers then counter attacking from there. In this case the Russians reclaimed the first layer driving the Ukrainians back to their starting positions. The Russian MoD's public statements about this event was high on praise and exaggeration. ISW contextualizes the event stating that how all of this went down was classic Russian doctrinal defense successfully executed against what is thought to be only a small, brigade size recon in force operation lacking what a division size attacking force would deploy in armor, artillery and aviation assets.

The information spaces are going to be filled with Russian claims of victory over the Ukrainian counter-offensive in total. That's not accurate, not even close but is classic Russian propaganda. ISW cautions against over-focusing on what is being characterized as a Ukrainian defeat when the operation claimed by the Russians to have been "repelled" is a small part of the operation involving the entire front (about 600km) that Ukraine is attacking, e.g. at this time, there are 3 other known axis of attack that neither the Russians or especially the Ukrainians are talking about.

he counter-offensive is a step by step operation that is going to go on for weeks if not months. The anticipation of this Ukrainian counter-offensive in the west has created an unrealistic expectation of this grand, flashy victory in a day or two. The success of the Ukrainian forces in driving the Russians out of the Kharkiv Oblast in September '22 in a week has contributed to the unrealistic expectation that this counter-offensive will be done in short order. It won't be.

The flooding in the Kherson Oblast created by Russia's destruction of the NovaKarkova dam continues to decimate cities and settlements in the Dinipro's flood zones. Waters are, in some locations, 18-20 feet deep covering the rooftops of some residences. Photos coming in tell the terrible story of the human toll of this, another atrocity, committed by Putin. The Russians appear to hav been unprepared for the flooding of thier defensive positions in flood zones. There are reportedly Russian personnel and equipment losses when Russian defenders had to quickly retreat in a reportedly chaotic fashion. Regardless, Ukrainian military operations will be impossible on any axis involving crossing the Dinipro. Analysts do not think this is going to impede the Ukrainian counter-offensive over all. The Nuclear power plant in Zaphorizia continues to be running safely although at reduced power output and with enough water to keep the cooling ponds full.
