        • I've been following ISW (Institute for the Study of War) since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The staff is loaded with conservatives, mostly x-military so, the stuff they publish has a decidedly conservative, pro-war tilt. ISW does a daily assessment of the Russian offensive. They do not write about battlefield specifics such as troop locations and size and instead take a "big picture" view of the entire political, information and geographic battle space. Their articles deal extensively with why restoring Ukraine's internationally recognized boarders is strategically relevant and serves the interests of the US.

Below is an excerpt from a assessment done yesterday that discusses re-framing how the west should see the war in Ukraine. It touches on some of the things that have come up here. The entire article is linked below but it's thesis is that the west needs to reject seeing the war as one where Putin comes to a negotiating table to end the conflict and Zelenski is pressured to make concessions. That's what Putin, through his propaganda organs, wants us to perceive it as and serves his purposes and advantages Russia in the current conflict. The article argues that seeing it that way plays into Putin's hand and over the long term Putin can and will prevail in achieving his maximalist goals.

Instead, the west should be seeing a war where Ukraine prevails by defining it, not as a single offensive operation requiring finite support, but, rather an operation that is made up of a series of them each requiring a separate level of support over time. Each requiring that western nations build up their military industrial base so as to be able to produce the necessary arms to facilitate the success of a series of operations that will ultimately drive the Russian occupiers back to Ukraine's internationally recognized boarders. Some of them will be successful in regaining territory from the Russian occupiers, some won't. The key is for the west to see the war as a process of sequential military operations intended to thwart Putin's attempt to restore Russian empire by grabbing Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and as many states previously belonging to the Soviet Union as he can.

The US should not fall for the Kremlin’s perceptual traps or preemptively handicap its policy options by setting the expectation of peace talks that the Kremlin has expressed zero desire to enter in good faith. Russia is a not just any belligerent — it is a belligerent that has repeatedly and purposefully hijacked the notion of peace as a lifeline for its aggression.[16] Setting expectations of negotiations before helping Ukraine expel Russian forces further from Ukraine’s territory only benefits the Kremlin.

Additionally, this war cannot be resolved through typical negotiations. Putin has resorted to a full-scale invasion of Ukraine when other means to control Ukraine failed. The Kremlin is engaged in a genocidal effort, aimed to eradicate Ukrainian identity and statehood through a large-scale mechanized invasion.

The US and the West should instead reorient their defense production to resource Ukraine’s successive counteroffensive operations and — critically — help Ukraine plan for a sustained force regeneration effort. This requires recognizing the necessity of an upfront investment to secure US long-term national security interests. Enabling Ukraine to achieve a decisive victory faster is a better investment than allowing — through either lack of action or pressuring Ukraine into concessions — Russia to pursue the long war that is the Kremlin’s likely best chance of achieving its maximalist objectives in Ukraine.

          • A couple of interesting new items today:

            1. In a recent poll, those who said they "disapprove" of Biden and also "disapprove" of Trump were asked if they would vote for either if the race was Biden v. Trump as now looks likely. By a 54% to 15% margin, those voters chose Biden.

            2. In the "bank run" on Silicon Valley Bank, 85% of all deposits were removed by depositors in the first 24 hours after the run began. The Fed is doing a study now relating to how rapidly bank runs can happen with electronic banking now the norm.
