The open press and a good portion of the institutes writing about the war in Ukraine don't seem to be painting a very accurate picture of what the Ukrainians are achieving. The millbogger community - some of it - has been pretty good in depicting what's happening on the ground. The last 2 months have seen increased Russian attempts to gain ground. On Putin's recent orders to the army to control all of the Luhansk and Donets Oblasts by March 27th, the Russian army is massing large numbers of personnel with the intent of overcoming, by sheer numbers, Ukrainian defenses of key terrain in these Oblasts. FIghting is centered at the western boarder of the Donetsk Oblast along 60km front that encompases Savatove to the north, Kreminia and Bakhmut to the south. Aside from this, the Russians have conducted only limited operations elsewhere in Ukraine. These limited operations are thought to be feints in an attempt to occupy Ukrainian forces.
Russian losses, across this short front, throwing waves of poorly led, trained and equipped soldiers across open terrain into dug in Ukrainian defenses are horrendous. GIven the price being paid for minimal tactical gains and zero strategic ones, you can argue Putin is nuts. Nonetheless, he seems unmoved by the human sacrifice of what analysts now believe amounts to some 200K dead or wounded.
Since the invasion first started nearly a year ago, the Ukrainians have avoided force on force tactics focusing instead on picking off rear area equipment, command posts, troop, ammunition and fuel concentrations. They've also selectively and successfully damaged or destroyed highly symbolic targets like the Kirsh Straights bridge and the Russian cruiser, Moskva. The Russian rear areas feeds this massive foot soldier onslaught along the current focused front, most of it without air, armor or artillery direct support. When the components are used, fixed wing aircraft and helicopters get shot down, artillery is subject to counter-battery fire and armor poorly deployed is strcuk by anti-tank weapons.
This purported Russian offensive is going to fail for lack of soldiers, slaughtered in utterly stupid human wave attacks, armor, artillery, aircraft and supplies - those being targeted when deployed forward or stored in rear areas by the Ukrainians.. The success of this strategy is evidenced by the lack of substantial territorial gains over the last two months by the Russians in westward directions from the fronts of the DNR and LNR. Those successes are largely due to the provision of western arms to Ukraine and in particular precision guided artillery systems which are facilitating the success of the Ukrainian tactics of striking behind the front in rear areas the Russians can't defend. As well, Ukrainian leadership of motivated soldiers fighting for their homeland plays a positive role.
The clip below is one of many that I see making fun of stupid things the Russians do or of pin-point destruction of Russian equipment obviously out in the open and vulnerable to drone spotting followed by directed, probably precision guided munitions. Make sure to turn the volume up on the video.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
