  • There have been conflicting reports on the impact of sanctions on the Russian war fighting economy and how Russian consumers are being affected. A report I read this weekend focuses on the value of the ruble. It rose at the start of the war, held relatively steady and about a month ago began to drop. Russia trades energy in dollars so the Ruble/$ exchange rate is important. When it declines, energy prices, and everything that is remotely attached to these, goes up in Russia and real war fighting income goes down. Analysts predict the downward trend in the Ruble will continue choking off Russia's ability to pay for its war. Hi tech components are in short supply limiting the resupply of modern weapons that depend on them. Suppliers of all goods - consumer and otherwise - who relied on stock on the shelves have burned through that and no new deliveries to suppliers are expected. This is going to trickle down to consumers and the MOD.

Certain consumers, middle and upper middle class, are beginning to feel the pinch with empty grocery and department store shelves and rising fuel prices. Not likely enough to take to the streets and start calling for the end of Putin's war but the underground complaining, already underway, will increase. Russians, the ones that matter, have access to outside information that counters Putin's so far effective propaganda intended to rally national pride and willingness to sacrifice for the war effort. Its effectiveness relies on a picture of successes on the battlefield. Of course, state broadcast media give viewers plenty of that but it's on line video, some of it pretty graphic, that paints a much different story.

Putin has not blocked Telegram, a prominent on-line messaging service. That is due to the impact that nationalist, pro-war milbloggers have on public perceptions of the war. Not all of it is positive - a lot of it being highly critical of the Russian MOD. But, overall, it is at least balanced with some of it coming from people on the ground where reports are originating. Being balanced, whether the pro-war milbloggers know it or not, the best you can say about the progress of Russian forces on the ground is that it is slow. Putin has made several recent speeches in various forums to stress that this will be a long and difficult special military operation but Russia will prevail. That remains to be seen. The conflict is at a tipping or inflection point per ISW and will "culminate" (this is as far as an operation can go based on combat power and logistics support) for one side or the other in the early part of 2023.

If things go Ukraine's way, the road ahead is going to get harder and harder for Putin. Most dangerous outcome involves three entirely possible events: (1) Ukraine pushes Russian forces back further east from the Kharkiv Oblast border securing defensible positions from which to shell remaining Russian defensive positions back to the Russian border. (2) Ukraine penetrates Russian defensive positions and breaks through with armor and artillery in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts (DNR and LNR). (3) Ukraine clears the entirety of a poorly defended Kherson Oblast and approaches Crimea.

These events will likely happen sequentially and if Ukraine succeeds, Putin will be forced to either sue for peace on Ukraine's terms or threaten the use of nuclear weapons citing a threat to Russian territory - all three Oblasts previously held by Ukraine and illegally declared Russian last July. The world will hold its breath.

            • Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavarov, has been running his yapper stating that Ukraine must submit to the Kremlin's demands or the Russian Army will decide the issue. Hah. Brings back memories of Richard Nixon's musings, I'm not a crook and Baghdad Bob's, everything is under control as American tanks approached the city center.

Those Russians that occupy positions of power in the Kremlin have a history of being out of touch with reality wrt the war in Ukraine. Putin spent a good two years before the invasion and due to COVID, completely isolated. The intelligence supporting his invasion plan was seriously flawed. It is crystal clear he had made up his mind he was going to invade Ukraine despite reported remonstrations from economic and military advisors against that COA, long before he ordered the invasion almost a year ago. The biggest problem for these guys is that no one wants to give them bad news. They learn what Putin wants to hear, for example, and feed that to him regardless of its veracity.

It's turning out that social media platforms, Telegram and Twitter in particular, along with YouTube that hosts video, are better sources of information than any official agencies both in Russia and Ukraine. Russian reporting is tilted toward a Russian audience and depicts great successes. Ukrainian reporting is famously ambiguous and often purposefully misleading. Certainly, the Ukrainian bloggers I follow have an agenda but, for example, official sources characterize the fighting around Bakhmut, a city in eastern Ukraine that has become a focal point of the Russian Army, as a stalemate, a difficult and tense situation favoring the Russians in a local battle of attrition. I watched a video of two Ukrainian soldiers casually walking in Bakhmut's city center narrating that there are no Russians in sight and if they show themselves from their hiding places, they are "liquidated." Bakhmut is Ukrainian, have no doubt, they say.

Accompanying this video is another showing the use of a drone (you're watching the drone operator's video screen), rigged to carry a grenade type device dropping it from directly overhead onto the turret of Russia's most advanced tank, the T-90. The tank blows up tossing the turret a hundred yards to its right. How does that happen? It's a grenade! The T-90 carries its ammunition directly under the crew compartment in the turret. All Russian tanks are built like this and notoriously are vulnerable from a vertical attack on the turret. A small explosive device will penetrate the top of the turret, explode inside the tank and ignite the ammunition creating a huge blast that totally destroys it.

Next up is an overhead still photograph of what used to be a Russian defensive trench line somewhere near Bakhmut. There are 17 reportedly dead Russian soldiers all in close proximity circled in red. I'm sure there are similar events showing bad outcomes for Ukrainian soldiers and, no shit, this is a Ukrainian milblogger. But still. ISW follows Russian milbloggers and reports on their posts on a daily basis in their updates. Importantly, since some of them are actually on the ground reporting, they don't disclose positions. At the same time, they are mostly critical of Russian army failures. That is telling.

It's my view that the Russian Army will decide the outcome but it will be defined by its neutering by the Ukrainians and its subsequent inability to continue to prosecute combat operations. As I've said, we'll probably know something, one way or the other whihc way this thing is going to go, by mid-February at the earliest. All sides reporting on conditions in the battle space suggests something significant - such as a break through by the Russians or the Ukrainians - is going to happen.

                Comment

                • Back in the motherland, Putin has been obliquely criticizing Oligarchs connected to Putin, who are spending money outside of Russia. He has already sent proposals to the Duma to nationalize the assets of some of these "traitors to the cause" to contribute to the operation in Ukraine. We're not talking chump change here; its estimated to be in the billions. The guy brooks no question of his authority from any corner of Russia and people that don't kiss the ring are targets for assassination.

Just to be clear. This is the face of authoritarianism that too many westerners, comfortable that they aren't threatened in anyway by Putin's invasion of Ukraine and believe Ukraine could vanish form the face of the earth and it wouldn't matter. Let's ask the Poles, the Finns and the Swedes how they see that. We can certainly add Moldova and Latvia to the group of free citizens at the moment fear Putin's next move should he be allowed to absorb Ukraine into the Russian Federation.

There was enough evidence that he aggrred for the trial

there was enough evidence that they just ruled against hobbs for seeking sanctions

and again who cares about 8th and 9th house seats or the commisioner of mine or the secretary of schools--

same thing applies no matter where the voters were they either voted democratic the top 5 races on the ballot then crossed for treasury and and the sec of office or they voted straight republican
but crossed over to the dems side for the top 5 races on the ballot.

the other weird thing is over the past few years theres a lot more people registering republicans then democrat--so the trendc is to register republican but vote democrat

When you tell Republican McCain voters to pound sand, you are going to have many crossover votes. It's not a hard concept.
