There's an audience for that nation wide that turns into a conservative voting block come November of '24.
I may quibble with details, but fundamentally I think the Progressive wing punches way above their weight in the D party and I think The Chairman is generally beholdent to them. And I don't think The Chairman is, ummmm, necessarily in charge.

              • Everybody used to know natural immunity is far better than vacs. That guy obviously contacted Covid at some time which about 90+ have been infected of date.

                Comment

                • Not quite and it's complicated. There's a huge amount of confusion on the question, is natural immunity from a previous infection better than a vaccine in preventing reinfection with SARS2? That's because when the question is asked the answer depends on how it is framed and what is meant by the term "prevention".

Among persons who had been previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 (regardless of whether they had received any dose of vaccine or whether they had received one dose before or after infection), protection against reinfection decreased as the time increased since the last immunity-conferring event; however, this protection was higher than that conferred after the same time had elapsed since receipt of a second dose of vaccine among previously uninfected persons. A single dose of vaccine after infection reinforced protection against reinfection.

As you might expect, there are other studies that don't comport with the NEJM study conclusion. As is the case with every study when you're looking at proof of a hypothesis (or proving the negative hypothesis) is the study design and it's power, objectively measured. The NEJM study is a good one among many having been undertaken to delve into this question. The weight of the evidence suggests that in general, COVID vaccines have a positive impact on reducing the rate and severity of SARS2 infections. There are going to be individual cases where this isn't true - like the one above.

Good. Don't tell Russia because they'll kidnap another US citizen and hold them for an exchange.

                          • In Ukraine, Russian forces are trying to gain something they can call a success gaining territory at the western boarder of Donetsk Oblast in the small city of Bhakmut. Estimates are that Russia has focused about 40% of it's already degraded combat power in this area and still aren't making a lot of progress and the little they are gaining is at a very high cost with little tactical or strategic value. The Ukrainians are in the same circumstance although they are better equipped and combat ready that their Russian counterparts. The difference is Russia has numbers. The battle for Bhakmut has been called a "meat grinder" by Ukrainian soldiers posting on social media.

Meanwhile Putin continues to bombard major Ukrainian population centers - now with almost solely Iranian Shihad drones and artillery when in range- targeting the power grid. RUssia is getting artillery shells from NK and lots of drones from Iran. By most estimates, 40% of Ukraine's power grid has been seriously damaged rendering it incapable of distributing electricity to the population. In norther Ukraine, including Kiev, it's full blown winter with daytime temps not rising above freezing. Remarkably, from journalists on the ground throughout Ukrainian, they are reporting that spirits remain high, people are resourceful and, except in the few pro-Russian areas in the east, focused on getting though this war and forcing a Russian withdrawal at the hands of the Zalenski government and his armed forces.

Putin continues to infuse the Russian information space with reports of the Russian army stabilizing the front lines and blocking Ukrainian forces from making any new territorial gains. This after having to deal with Russian withdrawals in Kharkiv and Kherson. He emphasizes in patriotic tones how this is going to be a long operation to liberate Ukraine. There is still a strong contingent of Russians who are nationalists and support his patriotic operation to liberate Ukraine. He is speaking to this base and depends on it holding up. At the moment, there are no indications that it won't or that his power and authority inside Russia are threatened. Keep in mind, Putin has spent two decades surrounding himself with people who ideologically think as he does. The rest may not but depend on him for their stature within Russian and benefits they derive from him. Putin has built an effective barrier to any attempt to dislodge him from the life time presidency he has managed to assign for himself.

In his information space shaping efforts, Putin has said, "don't believe anyone but me." He emphasizes this because Russian propogandists and his services that try cannot completely seal off sources of negative information about his war - the facts - coming from bloggers inside Russia and from YouTube that many Russians who want to can get access to via VPNs. The younger Russians know how to do this, older ones don't. Consequently, you can ID Putin's base of support: Older Russians who primarily listen to state news and the younger, less educated that did not have the means or perceived the need to flee.

                            • In other Ukraine news: Over the last 48 hours, Ukraine has struck multiple targets in Russian held Ukrainian territory including Melipito in the Zaphorisia Oblast and Crimea. This comes after several blasts reported inside Russia last week. Three of those involved military targets. On Friday, a large shopping mall south of Moscow, previously where many high end western retailers had shops and have now pulled out or Russia, blew up in massive fireball. Reports have it that the mall contains a home improvement store similar to Home Depot in the US and the explosions came from paint supplies stored there. Doubtful. The video showed a huge blast that caused a fire that was still burning 6h later. The blast I saw on the video image of it looked more like high explosives/ammunition blowing up that might have been stored there - and this is the kind of place the Russians would store ammunition to hide it from overhead satellite surveillance.

Reportedly a spokesperson from the Pentagon told reporters that the US has lifted any cautions forwarded to the Ukrainian government to not useUS supplied weapons (HIMARS more specifically) to hit targets inside Russian territory. The US view has shifted in saying that as long as Russia lobs weapons into Ukraine attacking civilian infrastructure, the Russian bases from which bombers carrying cruise missiles are being launched from are fair game as are artillery storage sites (like the mall above).

This is one aspect of the war in Ukraine where the west has some leverage and should use it. Putin has threatened to attack staging points for weapons the west is providing to Ukraine. There are several places that are doing that and most of them are NATO members. Poland in particular. Putin knows (or has been told secretly) that any Russian attack of these staging areas in NATO countries would provoke a NATO military response. This is absolutely the worst thing that Putin and his degraded army and now exposed technologically inferior weapons systems throughout RUssia's military services could absorb. Strategically, Ukraine ha achieved noteworthy success in degrading Russian military capability by attacking supply points and GLOC. This would be a great opportunity for the US to provide Ukraine with the longer range versions of HIMARS and assist in targeting Russian supply points and rail networks inside Russia and Belarus that transport military supplies into Crimea and from there into eastern Ukraine. If Putin didn't like it, fine. Let him attack a NATO member state in retaliation. Go ahead. Make my day.
