Ukraine: New developments. Putin has embarked on a scorched earth policy of targeting large swaths of critical Ukrainian infrastructure - electrical transmission capacity (nuclear and otherwise), water distribution systems and, not yet being reported on but undoubtedly on going, cyber attacks on banking institutions and the computer networks that activate the controlling devices of any major system that relies on them to function.

It's the kind of cyber warfare talked about decades ago coupled with destructive attacks on key nodes. Putin is coupling these with the targeting of civilian residential and business structures for the purpose of terrorizing residents and business owners using conventional weapons. Putin has the resources to carry this kind of unconventional warfare off when it is becoming increasingly obvious he lacks the resources to prosecute a conventional war. This would involve force of arms and boots on the ground to eliminate Ukrainian soldiers and the equipment that supports them, then seize and hold key terrain within Ukraine. He's apparently failing using that plan.

It's also worth mentioning that the first evidence of high-tech Iranian drones, e.g. a potentially locally remanufactured Shahed-136, loitering, high angle stealth, kamikaze attack drone are appearing on the battlefield. They are difficult to detect, acquire, engage and shoot down. Depending on sophistication in EW countermeasures installed on board the drone, they can be jammed, somewhat an extension and another category of cyber-warfare. https://www.jpost.com/international/article-717402

Not too long ago both NATO acting collectively and independent western nations started planning for a war like this. How it is waged is classified and not in the public domain (e.g., jamming equipment targeting drones). We get glimpses that the capability is there - for example, the decreasing number of cyber crimes involving extortion. Reports that the Ukrainians have been engaging and destroying Russian drones with conventional air defense systems and western supplied ground based ECM are out there (these are likely black programs where reporting on them is censored and suppressed).

An interesting article I read months ago at a business web site that I don't recall the name of, discussed the advanced programing skills and tech development capacity that was active in Ukraine before the war. Lots of businesses there with well educated employees where those kinds of skills can be easily translated to cyber-attack and self defense against it. It could be a factor in this new approach to bringing down Ukraine and the Zelenski government that it appears Putin has embarked upon having probably realized he's not going to force that outcome on Ukraine in a conventional military operation. I hope it is.

I know many hold the belief that the west should not be getting involved in Putin's war in Ukraine. But what appears to be a major shift, possibly an earlier conceived plan B, in how Putin plans to achieve his political objectives in Ukraine, presents an ever growing threat to western ideals, the attendant world order and governing ideology if Putin succeeds in annexing Ukraine into Russia. It's just another battlefield the west has to prevail on. It seems the west has stymied Putin's conventional military operations and obtaining his strategic objectives these were intended to facilitate. A new cyber, high tech stealth battlefield, equally important is emerging.
