Lot's of "hi profile people" in DC are testing positive for COVID including Speaker Peolsi. I think the government should start requiring daily influenza testing so we can follow new flu cases. as well.

In case you were thinking of buying hybrid or an electric car...
Ever since the advent of electric cars, the REAL cost per mile of those things has never been discussed. All you ever heard was the mpg in terms of gasoline, with nary a mention of the cost of electricity to run it.
At my restaurant last night I was talking to a traveler who is a renewable energy executive. I asked him how things were going in that area. He laughed, then got serious.
If you really intend to adopt electric vehicles, he pointed out, you had to face certain realities. For example, a home charging system for a Tesla requires 75 amp service. The average house is equipped with 100 amp service. On his small street (approximately 25 homes), the electrical infrastructure would be unable to carry more than three houses with a single Tesla each. For even half the homes to have electric vehicles, the system would be wildly over-loaded.
This is the elephant in the room with electric vehicles. The residential infrastructure cannot bear the load. So, as our genius elected officials promote this nonsense, not only are we being urged to buy these things and replace our reliable, cheap generating systems with expensive new windmills and solar cells, but we will also have to renovate our entire delivery system! This later "investment" will not be revealed until we're so far down this dead end road that it will be presented with an 'OOPS...!' and a shrug.
If you want to argue with a green person over cars that are eco-friendly, just read the following. Note: If you ARE a green person, read it anyway. It's enlightening.
This guy test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors and he said, "For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine." He calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery. So, the range including the 9-gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles.
It will take you 4.5 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. In a typical road trip your average speed (including charging time) would be 20 mph.
According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery. The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned, so I looked up what I pay for electricity.
I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh. 16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery. $18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery. Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine that gets only 32 mpg. $3.19 per gallon divided by 32 Mpg = $0.10 per mile.
A gasoline powered car costs about $25,000 while the Volt costs $46,000 plus. So the Government wants us to pay twice as much for a car, that costs more than seven times as much to run, and takes three times longer to drive across the country.
GREEN ENERGY. IT'S FANTASTIC!!Shut the fuck up Donny!

I think some of that article overstates the numbers a bit but EVs are not a viable option for most people. Just a few days ago, out of curiosity I looked up how long it takes to charge a Tesla.
Here it is straight from their website:
Wall Connector
A Tesla Wall Connector offers the fastest charging speed for your home or office, adding up to 44 miles of range per hour charged. You can order a Wall Connector online and have it installed by a Tesla Certified electrician.
Mobile Connectors and Adapters
If you don't want to install a Wall Connector, you can use the 20 foot Mobile Connector and NEMA 5-15 adapter supplied with your vehicle and plug into a standard three-prong, 120 volt outlet. A 120 volt outlet will supply 2 to 3 miles of range per hour charged. If you charge overnight and drive less than 30 to 40 miles per day, this option should meet your typical charging needs.
You can also purchase an adapter bundle and charge with other outlet types, including a 240 volt outlet. Commonly used in homes to power larger appliances, a 240 volt outlet will supply up to 30 miles of range per hour charged.
Only $47,000 to $160,000? Yeah, that's a hard pass for me.

so my point is among the 81 million orangeman bad group--my kids among them were willing to take to the streets and let it burn if he got elected

Thankfully, there are members in the Senate who are willing to rise above the partisan fray. I want to particularly commend Senator Susan Collins of Maine, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Senator Mitt Romney of Utah for their political courage.

This is a weird story and I'm really curious about the motives here. I've heard basically nothing about what they think these two were up to.

EDIT: This second story suggests possibly Pakistani Intelligence? Or Iranian? I haven't read confirmation that they were non-citizens

That said, the almost impossible hill to climb is AA voters. At least for now. AAs are pretty much the only demographic that votes single party. Every other demographic is far more of a bell curve. Some are 60/40 D; some are reverse. But, the distribution is there and there's a chance to win over voters. 95/5 ain't a chance. It's death. So, IMO, the real messaging issue for Rs is to AAs.
In NYC, I think 25% of the population is AA. At current rates, that means the Rs lose that 23-2. That means, in order to get to "closer to 40%" the Rs would need to go 38-37 with the remaining 75%. C'mon.
So, I think the "city" issue often is just a reflection of the AA issue.
.
And that is why forward-thinking Rs like myself started with vouchers and charter schools in the 1980s. And to buttress your point, I spent 16 years in the everyday administration of one charter school and I never, even once, met an AA who was a Republican. That is a 600-student school for 16 years. We didn't talk politics much, but once we put the vice-mayor of Muskegon on the board, and the D party renounced her the next election.
I'll never understand why some AAs don't vote their own self-interest, but they just don't.
