The issue with a tight labor market is exactly what you Trumpers were arguing. Hannibal talked about it all the time in here, cut immigration and employers will be forced to pay higher wages to those Real Americans that have been ignored. Trump and you fellas won the argument, he cut legal immigration in half and put up a big, beautiful wall to stop illegal immigration in it's tracks. Those restauranteurs were no longer going to be able to hire illegals, same with construction companies.

If Joe Biden's federal supplemental UI is the culprit, we should see a drastic drop in job listings come August.

Basically we’re getting what AOC and Socialists want — a de facto minimum wage. Pay people not to work and force businesses to pay way more. That’s the only reason for the preposterous money dump when the economic recovery was so obviously ready to get going. The other benefit is to price up “bad” things like fast food.

Of course, the costs are fundamentally regressive, but whatever.

There's more than one cause but I agree the unemployment bonuses are the top culprit.

That said, the report you're citing that came out today (the JOLTS survey) is based on data for the month of April. Well, we already know that was the month of the very, very disappointing UE report and the subsequent May report showed much better numbers, so I'm inclined to think the worst of the unfilled jobs moment is over. Won't know that until July 7 when the May JOLTS data comes out.

Some commodity prices may also have peaked. Prob too early to say that definitively though, I admit. Consider though that lumber futures on May 10 were over $1700 and today they are around $1167. Granted that's still a lot more than at the start of the year.

Thanks for info, DSL. It makes sense April was worse for unfilled jobs. But, May could be bad, too. People aren’t choosing to work, for now. But that’ll change soon enough. So, my only real gripe is the excessive spend. But, if this is the only excess spend I complain about then we’ll be squarely in “do no harm” territory and I can live with that.

Some commodity prices have to come down. Lumber is obscene. The CPI is still the most important stat these days. Hopefully it’s not too bad. Hell, hopefully it’s positive.

And if you are for full employment and a tight labor market fast food wages are going to rise. Currently Amazon is hiring at a base rate of I believe $15.50 and hour with full benefits with a sign on bonus of $1k and a $200 vaccination bonus. They don't even interview you, you apply online and the give you a contingent offer based on a background check.

If you want to drive for one of their partners, those hire people $18 bucks an hour.

If all you need to do was give 300 bucks a week for a few months for a defacto minimum wage, this that is some next level galaxy brain thinking.

Ohio is considering passing a law similar to already-passed laws in Florida and Texas that would ban businesses and all schools, public or private, from requiring proof of vaccination.

Here's a semi-famous anti-vaccine activist (at the Ohio legislature) claiming that the vaccines are magnetizing people and will cause forks and other metals to stick to you. Also she claims the vaccines may be interacting with the 5G network. This woman is supposedly a doctor. I should add she was against vaccines long before covid. She is one of the "vaccines cause autism" people.

Virginia and New Jersey had state primaries tonight

Terry McAuliffe very easily beat 4 challengers in Virginia who divided the Prog vote between them. The race was called almost immediately (he's currently got over 60% of the vote). The VA Republicans got their heads out of their asses for once and nominated a halfway moderate candidate who at least stands a chance in November. Smart people I follow say don't pay attention to the DC burbs for this race...see if the Hampton Roads area swings Republican.
