I'm having a hard time convincing folks who I will entertain a discussion with about what went on in DC. It was not an insurrection and according to the law PDJT didn't incite one. Most people want to speed read the news if they read at all, believe posters on social media platforms who post wildly inaccurate and misleading information and succumb to being inundated with language TV commentators are foisting on listeners that suggest there was a violent insurrection and an attempt to overthrow the US government. I don't think "the party" has much to do with this other than joining in on the miss-characterizations flowing from too many sources of information with scant balance and counter argument.

IMO, this has driven the panicked reaction of government officials to activate NG forces, string barbed wire around state capitals and make a democratic republic look like a fortress defended under attack from insurrectionists. It is equivalent to the lies that Trump and his enablers advanced about election fraud .....I guess every action produces a reaction so, should not be unexpected.

Besides, no one wants to get caught flatfooted on inauguration day if some crazies want to cause trouble like DC authorities got caught flatfooted. While it's still speculative, I suspect that between the congressional leadership, Capitol police and the DC mayor's office, there was a decision made to allow protesters freedom of action and not to put on a show of force that might lead to unintended confrontations and someone getting hurt. BAD CALL. But I'm thinking that's why things got out of control rapidly as large crowds started mounting the capitol steps. It's going to come out in the investigations now underway. It will be no surprise to me if minimum presence and restraint were law reinforcements marching orders.

Yes. This has happened fairly recently in 2001 but not because of a death. Going into 2001 the Senate was tied 50-50 and because Cheney was the new VP, that made Trent Lott the majority leader. But then that summer Jim Jeffords of Vermont left the Republican Party, became an Independent, and caucused with the Democrats. Tom Daschle became Majority Leader and remained leader until the midterms. That same term was when Paul Wellstone (D-MN) died in a plane crash but that only reduced the majority to 50-49.

I disagree that calling it an insurrection is "equivalent" to the two months of outright bullshit about election fraud that Trump and his allies spread. I disagree that calling it an insurrection is as big of a lie as claiming that Mike Pence has unilateral control over who the next President was going to be.

I would have to agree that what's happening in DC right now looks like a whopping overreaction but the goal is to put so many boots on the ground that the retards that did Jan 6 get cold feet and stay home on the 17th and the 20th.

I would agree that what we're seeing is an over reaction. I think its a perceived 'better safe than sorry' response given that most Trumpanzees have clearly demonstrated themselves to be little more than rabid dogs, lapping up their master's incessant lies. They are now at a tipping point as they embrace their "we're the victim" philosophy. Do they want to continue to be the "Hang Mike Pence" and "Kill the cop with his own gun" party or do they want to get mental help and be de-programmed? I am hopeful a conservative party will rise from the ashes.

If on day one, Biden whines and snivels about the reported size of the inauguration crowd, on day two has his press sec forced to trot out an obviously doctored photo of the crowd and on day three has a televised Cabinet meeting where each nominated member tells the Prez that all Americans and Jesus Christ himself should be licking his shoes, then it will be time to beg the Canadians to invade.

I may have stated my point incorrectly ....... it is the MSM that has, IMO, miss-characterized both events. In the case of the summer riots, the characterization of them was "mostly a peaceful protest." In the case of the events in DC, "a violent insurrection." The first being wildly inaccurate in supporting the liberal positions such as defund the police and give a pass to lawbreakers because their lawlessness was justifiable, the second a wildly inaccurate characterization of the events in Washington while condemning the violence identifying it wrongly as an insurrection while supporting prosecution of perpetrators and law breakers.
