    • The 6-foot standard is a common sense space to limit droplet spread. I can understand it and support it.
    • Masks have a common sense application in that they reduce droplet spread with cough. We have worn them for over a hundred years in hospitals for that very reason. I can understand it and support it.
    • I, however, cannot understand reducing hours. Again, it sometimes has the exact opposite intended effect in that people-density can be heightened to obtain a service or a good that now has a much smaller window of operation.

I don't know how many deaths we end up with. Let's say 500,000 by March 31 (basically a full year of covid). That's 0.15% of the population. And the vast majority of that 0.15% is over 70.

We lose 600,000 to heart disease and the vast majority are over 70. There are plenty of mitigation measures we can take to lower heart disease (#TrustScience). We don't do it. We essentially allow people to live their lives -- eat all the goddamn red meat they want and sit on the couch for 20 hours at a time.

Subjugating individual liberty for the greater good is the stuff nightmares are made of. It's the backbone of draconian policies and governments including, of course, real deal Communism and Maoism. So, a lot of people get a little nervous when they are, in effect, punished to benefit others. That's a precarious place to be and you better be able to articulate a very good reason for the position AND a very clear limiting principle (lest some DSL's beloved "experts" try to apply the same approach to, say, laws designed to limit heart disease).
But if you're regarding a percentage like 0.15% as a small number, then 0.30% isn't that much bigger. And that takes us to 1 M deaths. Which back in March would have horrified you.

Heart disease ain't going away until the point when we're doing serious genetic engineering on ourselves, heh, but a pandemic is temporary. I think that needs to be a consideration when regarding restrictions on personal behavior. There's a difference between ordering people to give up beef, permanently, and give up 2AM bar service for a few months. I get it, it's a slippery slope. So is every single restriction on public drinking we had pre-covid.

But fair enough. I gots to jet.

      • What the fuck does limiting late hours do?
Well, supposedly people drink more after 10pm or whatever hour in the evening you choose. The obvious solution to that is to reinstate 18A.

We're just a few idiot experts away from proposing that kind of stupid shit.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

        • So, basically, it's a "Let's limit late night hours of operation without any articulable logic or reason because, gosh darn it, it seems like it's the right thing to do!"

It doesn't affect me. I actually prefer day-drinking at bars or or golf course clubhouses (happy hour specials!) - it's just now, they are gonna be way more crowded. Bah. Thanks, Obama. You're gonna give me Covid.

          • One of the basics mitigation strategies of risk management is when you can’t avoid the risk, you try to minimize the exposure to the risk. Reducing hours of operation is following this principle

            • Reducing restaurant and bar hours does nothing but make the open hours busier and thus more risky. Same with Walmart when they went from 24 hours to 12 hours...just made it more crowded. It's defeating the purpose. But since when does our government and it's agencies ever do things based in common sense?

              • I disagree, CG. You are just concentrating the exposures in a tighter window. Closing bars at 10pm, just means that the drinkers adjust their habits and the 11pm and midnight drinkers are now in line trying to get their drinks with the crowd a bit earlier.

                • If we’re going to assume that 75 patrons per 3000 sq. feet is safe enough at noon, and safe enough at 3pm, and safe enough at 7pm and safe enough at 9pm, but not safe enough at 11pm, we need to have an articulable justification. As it is, bars setting records from 9-10pm for reason. And it’s counterproductive.

                            • Meanwhile in Georgia, there's at least some potential that pissed off Trumpers could affect either race by not showing up to the polls. David Perdue got harassed by one of them at a rally today I guess. If the Dems want to run a nice rat-fucking operation, encourage these idiots to show the GOP they won't stand for this betrayal of the Dear Leader.
