  • Agreed on the density it does have something to do with it. I think travel points have a lot to do with it as well. I don't know about the Ohio airports but I know DTW has direct flights to China. There is actually not that many airports that have that(it looks like 9 and most of them are hotspots). There is a lot of traffic through China through DTW, I think with Ohio V Michigan DeWine went in much earlier and really Michigan should have went in earlier than Ohio. There is also a lot of traffic through DTW to Italy because of FCA. London was going to bear a big brunt because Heathrow is a gigantic airport.
Michigan, (specifically DTW) may have gotten a 1-2 punch of the virus. Its a large hub for flights to and from Asia, and its also a major entry port for Europe.

Something else to consider is that downtown Detroit has three casinos (Greektown, Motor City and MGM Grand). Lots of people get off the plane, and head to the casino hotels, where loads of local Detroit area folks also go. Especially seniors. That could be a partial explanation for the rapid spread in the Detroit area.

    • It's a wondrous time when those wacky Progs are embracing the 10th Amendment (while simultaneously accusing PDJT of not exercising enough of his authority).

      • Re Michigan, I think that highlights the very factor-dependent issues for each locality. I think some areas can easily get away with lax rules. I think others areas are fucked no matter what. Even if you could hold all variables equal and do a comparison, then the effectiveness of the lockdown measures would likely show clear positive results in comparable dense areas and only modest results in comparable low density areas.

And I think that's especially the case when, as Froot notes, we're more at the leading edge of this thing. One can certianly understand wildly disparate results at this stage. But the regression to the mean is coming. Provided you don't see healthcare rationing because capacity is exceeded, then eventually Columbus will look like Detroit in terms of cases and outcomes. But, given the nature of the two cities, Detroit got it's ass fast-tracked. Columbus is still waiting in line. This snapshot in time signficantly favors Columbus. But, come back in 6 months. It's going to look a lot closer. And I don't know or have an opinion re Whitmer, but I think her particularly assfuckery was written. DeWine and Whitmer trade mansions and it's Whitmer getting the puff pieces --- fuck, it's Whitmer looking like a VP candidate.

        • And whomever ends up as Joe's VP, will likely end up being President about halfway thru Joe's term.

          Klobucar or Whitmer as Prez?

          yikes ...

            • New York started releasing "probable but not confirmed" deaths. Basically people who died with the symptoms but before they could be tested. That raises the death total almost another 3700 people if they're included.

              • Whitmer is fine, she would be a decent VP candidate. People overrate the importance of VP candidates. Being the governor of Michigan is a tough gig dealing with the totally ridiculous DeVos clan.

Joe Biden is fine, he's not going anywhere halfway through a term. For crying out loud, we see a obese dullard every day operate with what is either dementia, megalomania or narcissism claiming he has absolute power like he is Louis XIV. It might be all three, during this crisis Trump has upped the game in bat shit crazy nonsense.

                • Whitmer btw has 71% approval rating on her handling of the crisis (Trump in the same poll gets 51% approval)

But that is not going to stop Republicans in Michigan from trying to pressure her. Wednesday, a Conservative Group is trying to get people in cars protesting Whitmer's decision to extend shelter in place and put new restrictions (for example, can't open greenhouses and nurseries, only so many allowed in stores etc.). In addition, 6 Michigan Republican reps (Bergman, Upton, Mitchell, Huizenga, Moolar and Walberg) wrote an open letter to Gov. Whitmer saying that the restrictions on Michigan residents is unfair.

I think Whitmer is a real good chance of being VP. The only thing that might stop her is dealing with the corona virus.

                            • I don't know why you two keep posting this shit..... and then DSL chimes in late supporting you two fucks.

Spoiler ...... Michigan fans with a clue know if M wants to win a conference championship in football it's gonna have to join the Ivy League and at this point that may be a stretch; or better yet play Division II ball.

Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
