Perhaps when we get a president worthy of the office then perhaps the press will write stuff worthy of publication.
The press has been pathetic for years- maybe even decades. CNN would still be looking for the Malaysian airliner if they didn't have Trump to get their jollies from.

Any idea on how close to capacity we may be on ICUs at the moment?

24-hour news channels have dramatically changed "the news". The original intent of CNN was not to compel the viewer to sit and watch hours of CNN every day. It was to give viewers a national-level version of their evenings news program available at any time of day. So if you actually sat and watched 4 straight hours you'd see a bunch of the same things over and over. Sort of like watching the same version of SportsCenter 4 hours in a row back in the day.

Not many people actually did that so they gradually added more "commentary" and eventually opinion programs to give people a reason to watch endless hours every day. And people will watch shouting and screaming at each other more than they will watch dry, old-school BBC-style reporting of the news.

                  • Yeah, that's part of it. But it's clear that CNN's "opinion" side of things leans pretty solidly one way and it colors the way the "report" news.

A thing going around twitter yesterday were the headlines from the NYT for the obits for Mao, Castro and Senator Coburn. If I didn't know better I would have assumed it was just another silly twitter parody.

                    • Anyway, the PDJT vs the Media stuff is a sideshow. It's clear the media is openly supporting anyone but PDJT -- from China to any Governor to anyone who criticizes him -- and it's clear PDJT isn't going to brook their open partiality with even a modicum of grace.

The real story remains case growth, death growth, overall capacity issues and the fate of the CFB season.

I'm not so sure. It seems like this is really the final showdown, Armageddon, if you will, between the two. Since the Democrats don't have a legitimate candidate, the media sees this as their last chance to stop Trump from getting a second term. Thus, they've gone full throttle into Endgame mode. It's despicable and disgusting, but one almost gets the sense that they're hoping that all hell breaks loose.

                            • And just one more comment on the media. The real fight is not Republican or Democrat (despite the way both sides want to be that). As long as whoever is in charge is of the establishment then the media is fine with it. Being of the establishment means that life for them won't change much. The donor class contributes heavily to both parties to make sure it stays that way. Sure one party might be into more identity politics and diversity (in an incremental way) but as long as the fundamentals don't change they don't care.

When someone comes to challenge the establishment, that is when they go after them all guns firing. They are out of touch with the anger that is down on the grassroots level. Trump's behaivor (among other things) just gives them more to go after.
