  • And here they come for social security. GOP introduces a plan....

On Thursday, Rep. Sam Johnson, a Republican from Texas and chair of the Social Security subcommittee, introduced legislation to significantly cut Social Security. For most workers, the bill would cut Social Security benefits substantially. As Michael Linden, associate director for tax and budget policy at Center for American Progress, pointed out on Twitter, a letter from Social Security’s Office of the Actuary calculated workers making around $50,000 would see checks shrink by between 11% and 35%.

      • Yeah, I have 529s and kids nearing college. Voting against the Marxist will be an easier vote if I look at it like that.

        • Cutting Social Security is a necessity. The unfunded liabilities for it are massive. The sooner people come to grips with that reality, the better.

Means testing is bullshit since there is little more that is indicative of your life's decisions than your financial position at retirement. And it won't save jack shit since most people will end up not having "means". But it's inevitable anyways. Dems will be a permanent majority in all three branches of government when the shit hits the fan, so think of the least sensible, least economic strategy for managing the shortfalls and that is what we'll get.

Or you could just raise the cap for Social Security taxes and at the least you can put it off OR actually have it funded totally.

Missed the date on it. But Trump said in a recent interview that Social Security must be on the table.

                    • More good news on the terror front ........

The US and it's partners continue to leverage technology to fuck with the bad guys. Qasim al-Raymi, who has led the jihadist group Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) since 2015, was killed in a US operation in Yemen. Fuck them.

Qasim al-Raymi, who has led Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) since 2015, is killed in Yemen.

What's really good about this is that it is demonstrative of the Trump administration's continuation of it's policy of drawing down the US military footprint in the ME to reduce it's vulnerability to asymmetric attacks from shit groups like this while at the same time cutting off their access to money that buys explosives and arms and killing their leaders. Sure, keep them coming. Step up ..... and get blown away by a drone armed with lethal weapons.

I'm sort-of enjoying the shit-storm going on between the Russians, Syrians and Turks in Norther Syria ..... the worthless sandbox US forces just wisely left to these idiots to kill themselves over.

Nice try ............ No president has touched SS in recent memory aside from a few minor tweeks. You believe that clown in the oval office is actually saying anything we can be assured he is going to act on? Congress will NEVER touch it.

Now, TBF, it's underfunded - and that depends on how you figure it either is or isn't. There are way better ways to keep it solvent - if you believe it is insolvent - than cutting benefits. And that proposition is mostly advanced by folks who just want to scare old ladies living only on that income.

Well here is a story here: https://www.marketwatch.com/story/on...aid-2020-02-04

That talks about it and it references this article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/22/u...are-trump.html

Snipped from that NY Times article are these quotes:

Asked in an interview with CNBC if cuts to entitlements would ever be on his plateAt some point they will be,called for a total of $1.9 trillion in cost savings from mandatory safety-net programs, like Medicaid and Medicare. It also called for spending $26 billion less on Social Security programs, the federal retirement program, including a $10 billion cut to the Social Security Disability Insurance program, which provides benefits to disabled workers.

                            • Thanks Democrats. Are you trying to ensure another 4 years of ? WTF are you thinking?

Iowa being 90% white bread, perhaps this is an outlier. Don't know if NH is much different. I wonder what the social and educational demographic breakdown is and compare it to more ethnically diverse states. I would have thought that the BernieBots and Butties would be young, but the joke in Iowa is that only old people vote (outside of campus towns).

IMHO, the most reasonable (ie not extreme) candidate is Amy K. Not sure why she is consistently hovering so low. Perhaps this a (to coin a phrase) "Trump Effect". Since brain dead, knuckle dragging, imbeciles on the right support Trump, it's only fair that the same social group on the left support their unhinged candidate. This is going to lead us to an election offering the worst two possible candidates on the planet to choose from. Again.

Woo boy. We are now Serbia.
