ABC's feature story on GMA this morning is ...... drum roll ..... Prince Harry and his wife Mehgan are "stepping back from Royal duties." This story was followed closely by the announcement that James Holzhauer won the second round of the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions. They did get around to reporting the result of the Iranian missile attacks characterizing it as "massive" damage to buildings at the target air bases in Iraq. The world in general and the US in particular has strange priorities with regard to the news they want to hear.
Iv'e seen several assessments of the strike over the last 24h with characterizations of the effect varying widely. On one of my FB feeds, a Marine located at one of these airbases stated he was fine, no big deal, heard a few explosions and went back to sleep ...... "thanks to the Patriot." We've not heard anything about air defense other than Trump saying obliquely that there was no loss of life due to defensive measures taken." I have no question that systems intended to provide some level of air defense for the Iraqi air bases where US forces are located are present. To what degree and what type, I have no idea and that is not going to be in the public domain unless the US wants it to be.
The Patriot is capable of tracking 100 targets simultaneously but has limited range so it is called a point defense system. The Iranian's fired "dozens" of ballistic missiles. We've seen overhead commercial imagery of the damage. Five buildings damaged with four missiles being labeled as duds and/or falling harmlessly elsewhere. That's a pretty low hit rate. I also question the characterization that how the targets appeared to have been selected by the Iranians demonstrate the missiles were highly sophisticated and accurate. If you read the link I provided it appears Iran does have a modest and reliable ballistic missile arsenal. "Highly sophisticated?" No. Did the Iranian's specifically avoid targeting troop locations? I doubt it as they claimed all sorts of false deaths and damage to the Iranian public. The missiles either got shot down by air defense systems or were spoofed electronically.
The accuracy of a missile is determined by what is called it's terminal guidance. Lots of methods to achieve that are out there - all of them using various signals emanating internally or from another platform (an Iranian drone was said to be in the area maybe for BDA). These guidance signals can be detected and interfered with. I suspect that in the current scenario they were. Compared to the Iranian attack on the Saudi refinery, where you can see highly accurate and lethal explosion points, there aren't any of those from the imagery I've seen. Electronic Warfare.
BTW, in the chess game of EW, when an enemy deploys a new system that has an electronic signature, all kinds of electronic intelligence is gathered. The US is vulnerable to intel gathering too when it deploys ECM (Electronic Counter Measures). You can bet the Russians and the Chinese had commercial aircraft looking collection assets airborne or positioned satellites capable of listening in overhead.
Finally and also of note, the general consensus on what's next is that the Iranians will continue to pimp the US and it's allies in the ME. It is one thing they do very well by using their proxies, mobilizing Shia and Persian nationalism inside Iraq, Iran and Syria, and recruiting Shia groups who have similar anti-american, anti-imperialist ideologies to their cause - ridding the ME of American military presence there. Proxies, like the Iranians used in the SA refinery attack, provide deniability on the international stage. Credit where credit is due. The Iranian thugs, dressed up in the false garb of a moderate Islamic theocracy and offering free shit through their socialist policies, have held power in that country since the Revolution in the 70s. They're not going away any time soon.
I would suspect something like the USS Cole explosion to go down ..... an aircraft carrier, and there are at least 3 of them operating in the region, would be an ideal target. Of course, oil tankers are easy targets. Installations in the Gulf States are also ripe for attack as are military personnel on those bases vulnerable to killings and kidnappings. It ain't over but I do think Iran will choose its next move carefully with the Orange Menace in charge of any US military response.Last edited by Jeff Buchanan; January 9, 2020, 08:53 AM.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
