  • Another factor, and I don't know how big of one, right around when Impeachment was first getting started is when Trump also announced he was going to hold the G8 at Doral and announced he was abandoning the Kurds to the Turks. So it's possible those two unpopular moves fed into the "support for impeachment" a bit and have since worn off.

    • Trump used congressionally-appropriated foreign aid to try and compel a foreign govt to give him dirt on a political opponent. Meh, "Trump's done worse" is what a lot of people are thinking in the back of their minds.
I think that's probably true. I also think there's probably a lot of general "meh" to this issue. I understand the gravity of the charge, but it doesn't affect me in the least and, honestly, it didn't affect anyone. So, maybe there's some real "meh" in terms of tangible harm.

I think the G8 thing you mentioned could also factor in. And, of course, anyone who thought this was going to be bipartisan is hilariously out of touch. There's nothing here that's gonna be enough to force the hand of Rs.

I think the bottom line is that impeachment support should be going up. These hearings are essentially one bad day after another for PDJT. Not only is support for impeachment not going up, it's going down AND PDJT's own approval ratings are going up. People are really struggling to figure out an answer. I dunno how much I buy that the Ds are overplaying their hand. Don't get me wrong, if anyone can overplay a full house, it's the Ds. In my heart of hearts, I really think it's your quoted point re desensitivized + no harm/no foul.

That is, of course, consistent with my opinion that the Ds win in 2020 by giving swing votes a safe alternative. Swing votes are more than ready to move on from PDJT. But they're also doing well. And the shit PDJT is doing isn't affecting them in the least. So, give them someone who isn't going to upset the apple cart too much and who will be fucking normal. That's all they want. (All of this is my opinion only -- I will say, I know at least 4 dudes who voted for PDJT who hate him and want him gone, but will still vote for him over Warren or Sanders).

Honestly, I believe the "Trump being Trump" effect is real. There's a genuine long-term impact on people when you behave outrageously day after day. It desensitizes them. So even when assuming all the worst things about this case: Trump used congressionally-appropriated foreign aid to try and compel a foreign govt to give him dirt on a political opponent. Meh, "Trump's done worse" is what a lot of people are thinking in the back of their minds.
I think it's more that people are coming to believe that behind-the-scenes political arm twisting happens all the time and that it's naive to assume that this arm twisting is always for the good of the State.

The sausage being made is not always easy to look at at first, but it becomes normal over time: Whether it's dubious oppo research dossiers being used for FISA Court warrants or a VP exerting his authority to get his son favorable treatment, or a President negotiating for "favors" that could damage political adversaries, these things will numb a general public over time as they are continually brought to light.

        • Well, if its now okay to have a leader with no regard for the law and only self centered motivation, I nominate Cersei Lannister for President.

That could be, too. I mean, I didn't delve too deeply into why some people see Ukraine as "meh" but this is certainly a viable explanation.

I forgot about the Steele Dossier. That was all fairly disgusting -- and essentially, Comey intentionally made it news. Whatever.

                DSL:

As luck would have it, the NRO actually linked an study on moderate/extreme candidates: https://www.andrewbenjaminhall.com/H...se_Turnout.pdf

The one thing I'd say is that in 2016 voters may have considered HRC more "extreme" than PDJT (and I think there's a case for that), but after 4 years I think the view is that PDJT is pretty extreme. So that dynamic has changed. In the context of the study, the Ds need to nominate someone who is viewed as more moderate than PDJT. They can do that. They can also not do that. That's what should be slightly terrifying.

Heh, Trump quite literally = Daniel Clamp from Gremlins 2. Back when he was still thought of as just an over-the-top but well-intentioned goofball

I'm very likely to be in that group that hold their noses and pulls the lever for PDJT. I will NOT countenance a vote for a D candidate of any socialist stripe.

Yep. And it could matter in Ohio.

However, the important thing to remember is that the Ds are never part of the problem. Ever.

A Texas woman was found dead after pre-dawn attack by a group of feral hogs outside a home, the Chambers County sheriff said.
