I talked to a highly experienced pilot about the problem with the Boeing 737 Max 8.

Does not surprise me in the least. The two pilots have slightly different takes: One says, ground the pilots until they have been adequately trained. That grounds the aircraft but not for longer than a week or two. The second pilot goes into much greater technical detail about Boeing's roll in apparently not getting the word out to the carriers so they could implement training and goes on to argue that there is a lot more to learn about this mishap and the current public and media discourse is making it hard for authorities to do that. I like both takes.

              • ...... I went back and read JF's article again including the links. I found it very interesting that the second pilot who sent JF a letter is far from being even ready to speculate, let alone certain, that the LionAir Mishap and the Ethiopian Airline Crash are related through a failure of the MACS or pilots failing to take action to shut it off if the MACS was malfunctioning.

He mentions that in the LionAIr Crash, there is an indication that the aircrew may have mishandled a faulty airspeed indication and the the MCAS system was correctly triggered, pushed the nose down to correct for low airspeed and high angle of attack (AOA) - AOA is the relative angle of the fuselage in relationship to the air stream flowing over the wings. For example, if the nose of your aircraft is pointing 20 degrees above the prevailing air stream flowing over the wings, your AOA would be 20 units. At that kind of AOA, the air stream will begin to separate from the wings - tips inward - the wing loses lift and if not corrected (by lowering the nose and increasing airspeed), the wing will stall and the aircraft will depart controlled flight.

This same pilot said that the recent Amazon Cargo airplane that crashed in Houston, a Boeing 767, appears to have experienced a loss of control sometime after take-off as in a stall and initial indications are that the airspeed and/or AOA indicator in the cockpit were providing inaccurate information. if so, the pilots could have put in inappropriate control inputs causing a stall and departure from controlled flight ...... it may be that this is the common problem, not the MACS as both the Boeing 737 Max and 767 have common airspeed and AOA devices and systems that deliver info to the pilots. His point was that we simply do not know yet and he makes it very clear that he finds it disturbing that the media is miss-characterizing information in a way that is probably badly misleading. He adds, the #1 rule in accident investigation is to not fall in love with your pet theory, in this case a bad MCAS. Point taken.

He goes on to identify his view that Boeing is responsible for what he believes are two failures: One in the aircraft design itself with the center of gravity (CG) changes incorporated that are behind the nose-up pitch tendencies of the 737 MAXs. The second is to include in their original flight manuals how the MACS actually works to correct this design flaw and what to do if there is a malfunction of it. He says the CG change is nothing that a competent and properly trained aircrew should not be able to cope with if they understand it and the system installed to automatically deal with it. He also mentions that Boeing designed the MACS on the 737 MAXs to rely on only one data input - the AOA. It should at the very least be backed up by airspeed and aircraft attitude (the angle of the fuselage in relationship to the horizon) so if the AOA is providing bad data, this can be reconciled by other data inputs.

                • Judge Jeanine wasn't on last night. Fox hasn't given an explanation why but it all suggests she's been suspended. Hasn't tweeted in almost a week either, since she made her hijab/Omar comments. So of course Trump is pissed about that and is demanding Judge Jeanine be put back on the air immediately. Don't worry about being politically correct (Pirro questioned whether a Muslim could possibly uphold the Constitution, they all want sharia law, that sort of typical far right fear-mongering).

Trump's going on a real tear this morning, again calling for the FCC to investigate Saturday Night Live because they were mean to him.

As has been revealed this month, as soon as he jumped into politics, Trump had Michael Cohen threaten and harass all of his schools and demand they either hand over his school records or face financial ruin should they leak out.

                          • You gravely insult asinine HS jocks everywhere. To continuously attack a deceased war hero and selfless public servant because of his own petulant, fragile ego is sore as his own criminal activities are being exposed is less than pathetic. It borders on mental illness and is a clear indication of Trump's lack of fitness for the office he infects. The fact that there are any supporters of Trump at all is a sad indictment of the US population.

Megan McCain had it right on two accounts....one yesterday and one at her father's funeral.
