  • More Midwest farms went bankrupt last year than any year since 2008. In the 7th Circuit of Appeals alone (which oversees Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana) the number of bankruptcy cases has nearly doubled since 2008, even while bankruptcies overall are down.

The report is actually in the WSJ but behind the notorious pay wall

American farmers are filing for bankruptcy at a rate not seen since the 2008 recession, according to a Wall Street Journal report. “The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, which includes Illino…

    • SNL being unfunny has been a crisis for a long time. Other Presidents couldn't deal with it. But HE will deal with it.

      • Yes, exactly.

One more thought: when Alec Baldwin first started his (bad) Trump impression on SNL, the President howled on Twitter. The better move by Trump would have been a tweet along the lines of....." Just saw Alec Baldwin imitate me on SNL. Loved it! I have always held to the two old adages of 'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery' and 'there is no such thing as bad publicity'. Need more! He needs to work on my mannerisms a bit though. Plan to invite him to the White House for a luncheon so he can learn in person!"

            • A nice read on Brad Pitt's home-building 'Make it Right' charity in a poor area of NOLA.

A couple of thoughts: (1) No good deed goes unpunished and (2) instead of going with all the fancy architects' design concepts and solar panels and having a loose patchwork conglomeration of engineers and design firms and whatnot, he should have kept it simple and given the money to Habitat and had them build. For the same money, Habitat would have built 4 times as many homes and would have been able to give them away without charging residents. As it is, residents bought reduce-priced concept houses and many of those houses had design flaws and now people are suing Brad and others. It's really a shame.

that's an odd claim, couldn't the US Government mean any of our legislatures? lots of Senators and Representatives think he deserves it could have written to Abe and probably Moon.

regardless, you are assuming "the US Government" means Trump himself.

i insure farms, and the economic ups and downs are opposite for farmers odd as it is. commodity prices are low right now and usually are in times when the dollar is stronger. when the economy is in the shitter farmers do pretty good, and its usually a 7-10 year cycle.

also, wanna know why most farmers vote Republican? it's the 2nd amendment and environmental regulations. that is why Trump won't lose the farmers.

                        • Amazon almost doubled their profits last year over 2017. For the 2nd straight year, they will pay no federal income taxes and best of all this year they get a $129M tax rebate.

Yep, we better continue to cut those corporate taxes.

Congressional ceding of power to the Executive branch is a parallel conversation, not a supporting one, to the issue at hand. This is a national emergency declaration based upon a non-existent problem in order to subvert, with malice and forethought, Constitutionally specified powers of appropriation. This is a willful disregard of the Constitution by the person sworn to uphold it.
......Congress has the authority to rescind the national emergency declaration of Trump with a vote of both chambers. The legislative branch should do so. (edit, I don't think they will). If Congress cannot muster the votes (edit, I don't think they can), however, a federal judge is unlikely to do so. Simply put, the courts were not created to protect Congress from itself. Congress has been heading to hell for decades, and it is a bit late to complain about the destination.

                            • Holy shit...this story...

Georgia's Speaker of the House is also a practicing defense attorney. It's claimed that he has used his position as Speaker to repeatedly delay his client's cases. In one, a man charged with a DUI has had his trial delayed 17 TIMES over the course of 10+ years thanks to Ralston saying none of the trial dates work for him. Another of his clients, who enticed and solicited a minor, has had his trial delayed since 2009 thanks to Ralston. Ralston appears to use his position as a Legislator as a reason for clients to hire him: he can delay their cases indefinitely by saying his Speakership duties prevent him from attending trials.

Alleged victims say powerful Georgia lawmaker David Ralston is using the power of his office to repeatedly delay cases of his private legal practice
