  • I think it's premised on the assumption that people across the country are going to see that whacko for who they really are (and migrate to my side of the debate for now at least but probably permanently). Both can't be right about the payoff they are anticipating. When it comes to economics as a political outcome, things are going to keep going in the direction they are going, or they will go in another direction.

    • I don't think Obama voters had the same devotion as MAGAs, Obama had a big following but it dissipated fairly quickly after each election. He certainly wasn't playing to the large throngs of people in campaign rallies year round all the time like Trump is. He just had 69.000 people sign up in El Paso for a campaign rally that was only supposed to hold 6,500.

                • Everybody in that story is acting within their power, and that's fine. The city did the deal and people don't like it, so they are voicing their concerns, and a significant number of them would not agree with your second paragraph, or, regardless of dollars and cents just don't find it palatable for their town to provide a tax-free existence to the world's richest man. People make decisions with heads and hearts on both sides of the aisle. Their reps appear to be listening, so, again, job well done there. Nobody's forcing them to offer incentives and nobody's forcing Bezos to stay without them. Compared with a lot of other political-decisionmaking processes these days, this is pretty darn functional.

It won't be the only jurisdiction where Amazon has political risks from spotlight-hungry politicians. AOC is not special there. If everybody has a price, they haven't found hers yet. Say what you will, but if she proves unable to buy off, that's a very difficult thing to criticize. Might make her even more popular.

                  • then she's no dumber than the people that elected her. she said 'instead we can use that 3 billion and invest it in schools and the subway...' the 3 billion doesn't exist. it was predicated on Amazon paying 27 billion over 10 years rather than 30 billion. you get that, don't you?

                            • People get hung up on the fact that Bezos is rich or that Amazon is profitable. It's almost like those designations have become pejorative.

Anyway, on to more important stuff: editing all the Wikipedia articles that incorrectly note Lord Saban's win percentage now that Ole Miss has vacated a win against Bama.

Plus, man, Bezos is a white male. Good god.
