Gillum was an unlikely front runner and it is surprising he's narrowly out in front of Graham, the favorite to win among five dems vying for the democratic gubernatorial top spot.
What has likely turned the vote to GIllum is the recent controversy over the red tide which has killed tourism in a good part of east and west coast Florida. The current issue is the sugar industry subsidies and campaign contributions from the sugar industry lobby. Graham took campaign contributions from the sugar industry. Gillum is clean on that issue.
Sugar cane is big agribusiness in Florida. The fertilizers used in the cane fields are widely considered to be the cause of algae blooms like the red tide. Run off from the fields fills Lake Okechobe that then drains into coastal waters creating the nutrients for these algae blooms. There have been lots of environmental interventions proposed and shot down by the Florida Legislature, under pressure from the sugar lobby, over the last decade so this isn't a new problem. However, it has become THE key issue in this years race for governor. That Gillum has no ties to the sugar industry at all and has blasted Graham and the other dem gubernatorial candidates (Levine and Green) for taking money from the sugar lobby has boosted his standing among voters. He's actually a very decent candidate. If he wins, and it looks like he will, he will face Ron Desantis the R candidate. He's Trump's fav and as morally and ethically bankrupt as DJT. Gillum has a good chance of beating him. He is uniformly disliked in the state for opposing Medicaid expansion under Obama Care among other far right positions that he espouses. The current temperature of the state politically is definitely anti trump.
Edit: Putnam was a long shot to beat Desantis. There are parts of Florida that support Trump. Miami Dade and Broward Counties that will make up the largest portion of votes in the governor's race are decidedly anti-trump.

Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
Tallahassee city hall is currently under FBI investigation for corruption. Just throwing that out there.
Making excuses already. You are, however, correct.
but as anti Trump as the political climate reportedly is in Florida, odd that DeSantis numbers flipped from being down 15 to up 15 in the week following a single Trump tweet.
Jeff, I think you owe the board an apology for the nonsense you posted from The Atlantic and your comment that somehow the meeting in Trump tower was the tie-in point for collusion. It shows once again that you alt-left fellows are simply unable to come up with a TRUE scenario in which Trump and the Russians colluded. Now, you guys are unwilling to accept the "apology" from Clinton's consigliere when he admits making the whole "Trump-knew-before-the-meeting" bullshit up. And Cohen has recanted some of his "..sing or compose.." statements about who was present at that meeting. Look, Trump Jr. was going to the meeting to ostensibly receive dirt (of undetermined origin but supposedly from Russians) on Hillary Clinton. We know this from the emails that Junior released. I fail to see how this is different from Hillary operatives obtaining the Pussy tape and releasing it before the debate when it could do the most harm. I doubt if it is illegal to search for dirt on your opponent in any other political context save one involving Donald Trump. What was the Hillary campaign doing when it paid for the Steel dossier and leaked it?
I see CNN is standing by the "Trump knew..."story even though the person who started it now says he was confused and it is not true. It is amazing to me that sensible people like yourself continuously are duped by these liars and cheats. It is because you want to be duped in my opinion. Your hatred of Trump overrides whatever common sense you had. As I said so many times, I didn't vote for the guy, but let's give him a chance and see how he does.
And Kapture, I don't know where you get those "button" cartoons showing the enormous hypocrisy of the left, or at least the convoluted and mutually exclusive beliefs that they are able to hold at the same time, but I think they are great and I hope you keep posting them. I note that No One At All ever tries to take you on regarding them because they are so true. It takes a special kind of ignorance to hold mutually exclusive positions on issues such as fake news. But progs do this regularly. Listen to how many times the progs invoke the "middle-class" or "working families" when they know that 85% of their base is on some form of welfare. It is simply no wonder that they don't care one bit about the good economy ( second quarter GDP revised upward to 4.2% today) or about low unemployment. They don't pay taxes and they don't work. They care most about political power and the ability to steal from working folks through taxation and welfare. That is what elected Trump. And he is doing fine on things that matter (Canada coming around today regarding NAFTA).
I say again, what this country needs is for only net tax payers to be given the franchise to vote.
A Chinese state-owned company reportedly hacked former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s email server, then inserted code that forwarded them a copy of virtually every email she sent or received after that -- a revelation President Trump is demanding be investigated.
Let's see what the facts are if this is ever investigated, but if it is true, it becomes the actual harm done by Hillary's admitted violation of the Espionage Act. You progs want to bet this is never pursued? I guarantee no one at DOJ or FBI could care less about it.

The FBI has already put out a statement that there's no evidence Clinton's server was ever compromised.
