It's an interesting article. I strikes me as a total infomercial for that Cure Violence group. When they talk about crime going down in Glasgow I want the follow on kill shot -- "and it went up or held steady in other Scotland cities". Then when they tell their Chicago story -- I mean -- knowing what we know about Chicago it's almost implausible. To brush off the remarkable spike in homicides with a sentence about a cut in funding is intellectual hiding.

To me, crime is still more poverty-driven than anything else. They seem to assume that humans aren't naturally violent or don't have to be "this way" -- but when they're competing for scarce resources they actually are that way and sort have always been that way. That said, there are remarkably poor parts of the US that are exponentially less violent than Chicago. So, it's not the only explanation. But, I don't think the other explanations are actually cost-effectively redressable, either.

It is kind of rah-rah, but the actions are worth looking at. I agree that it that poverty is the single most important factor but I also think that peer influence (not peer pressure) also has a huge impact. "This is how everyone else deals with (specific situation), it appears to be my only option". This morphs into subcultures that further drive the problem.

Yeah I agree with this. My opinion is that it based on the following:

- poverty
- the war on drugs that led to an abnormally high incarceration rate, plus it kind of fueled the gang related murders
- societal issues, kind of what that article and GJ was getting at
- the amount of guns out in the public, I don't want to get into a 2nd amendment argument, but I'd bet if some of the other countries were as armed as the US, they would have a much higher murder rate. I think there is a lot of senseless deaths from altercations that could have been a blqck eye instead.

I'm sure there is more reasons. It is important to note that the crime rate is much better than it was 20 years ago. You wouldn't know it from the "bleeds it leads" coverage.
