An NRA survey (granted, from about 10 years ago) found that more than 50% of those identifying themselves as Democrats owned at least one firearm. Of those, 70% were dedicated hunting arms (shotguns, limited capacity long guns). 30% (of that roughly 50%) owned a hand gun. (No info on assault style rifles).
I find it funny that for years the NRA (and many conservative leaning people) push the fallacy that Dems "want to take your guns!". These people take outliers (the Pelosi / Boxer types) and paint with a very wide brush. It's very much the Big Lie treatment, say it often enough and people believe it. Much like the Dems painting all Repubs as amoral, adulterous, pedophiles. People of all stripes need to get out of their echo chambers and open their eyes. Once one recognizes that world really isn't exactly what one's prejudices say it is, its only then that rational solutions to horrible problems can be formulated.
No one is coming to get your guns. Armed evildoers are not hiding in your bushes waiting for unarmed citizens to emerge from their houses. The zombie apocalypse won't happen anytime soon. Mental health issues need to be addressed. Poverty induced sociopathic behavior needs to be addressed. The glorification of violence in 'entertainment' venues has an affect on young developing minds. The us vs them mentality of so-called adults needs to be throttled back.
Gun violence is a multifaceted problem that doesn't fit into a one stop solution. And it will take open minds to come up with effective solutions. Bring people in with no skin in the game. Its like a chess match. Many times, those watching the match will see an obvious solution that is not apparent to the players.
