  • A sad note for all those who enjoy humorous political and social satire. Sir Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld series, passed away yesterday at 66 from complications of Alzheimers. He wrote 70 books that have been translated into 37 languages. For those who’ve never read Pratchett’s works, if you combined the DNA of Mark Twain and J.R.R. Tolkien and gave him a handful of magic mushrooms, you have Sir Terry. His first Discworld novel, The Color Of Magic, was written on a lark as a spoof of the swords and sorcery genre. With the his spot on and deadly humor, he then turned to such subjects as women in the military, the post office, war, international diplomacy, newspapers, Christmas materialism, and many other subjects. He was knighted by Queen Liz for his contributions to literature in 2009.

Thanks Terry, for bringing irreverent sanity to an insane world.

Discworld author Sir Terry Pratchett dies at his home aged 66, eight years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

    • I predict a lot of these growth cities in the south are about to inherit the problems their peers have in the north. It's coming.
Yeah, this is the truth. The advantage SOME southern cities have is that they were zoned/built in a later 20th century model of vast incorporation. They also haven't experienced a crushing loss of manufacturing jobs or the dreaded "white flight". The Cleveland area is a ridiculous set of grossly inefficient "cities." Cleveland has no suburb land whatsoever so they're always struggling for cash. And it's corrupt as shit!

I really liked Omaha. I actually interviewed at ConAgra. They showed me around town and took through some of cooler neighborhoods. Really nice place. Unfortunately, it's way too far from our families. Twin Cities, too. I really like St. Paul.

Anyway, what I've found is that the shit I like to do can be done in almost any metro area in the country. Setting aside cost of livin, my life wouldn't be appreciably different in Rochester, Tampa or Denver. All things being equal, I'd probably pick the nicest place to get outdoors and ride/run. A place like Roanoke, Va would be great for that!

I was in the Twin Cities the first week of February, spent the night and had a Canadian Winter Flashback. Over a foot of snow, roads ice-packed, bone chilling winds, Northern Lights dancing on your shades.

Essentially it's the 11 Province, exported below the 49th Parallel, in fact they even behave like Canadians in terms of demeanor, speech and civility. Summers too short, winters too long.

              • But those are great friggin' summers. I like Minneapolis' downtown second-floor walkways as a solution in the winter. Note the accents here, to prove OP's point about Canada South:

                • They are called Pedways Hack (Canadian in origin), Edmonton & Calgary downtown business hubs are totally linked. It's actually a linked network, 30 kms long or more.

Your vid is overly melodramatic but does imitate life to a certain extent. However, Canadians are by and large, anti-gun, United Nations lovin', pro-homo rights, tree huggers. You'd fit right in.

                  • Youre damn straight we are. And keep your goldbricking ass outta my socialist workers' paradise, Lebowski.

The point there is it uses Minnesotans to mimic Canadians.

                    • Never saw The Big Lebowski, might have to add it to list.

Didn't care much for Goodman, any man that was married to Roseanne Barr, even only in Hollywood wedlock, made me nauseous.

Oh yeah, there is no "we", you are not a Canuck.

                      • For a guy like you I'm surprised at the lack of situation awareness.

Besides, I'm always situationally aware and I do have a rape whistle, it's known as a Beretta, PX4 Storm sub-compact, 9mm doublestack.
