No comment on the Salon piece -- he could or could not be wrong. There are certainly numbers to support the idea that Chavez spent on his own people. The NYT op/ed is complete nonsense. I'd hope the author cringes that it's still in the public domain attached to her name.
I didn't see anything about infant mortality upthread though. You mentioned democratic socialism, but I think it's pretty easy to imagine what's next when your revenue is halved and how much ideology counts when that happens.
The Wapo piece is excellent, IMO.
It makes the same basic point I'm making: understanding the commodity price cycle and saving for the collapse is irrelevant to ideology. His verbiage: Socialism, it turns out, explains nothing about why some countries turn into economic basketcases. Instead, it muddles the debate for political ends, delegitimizing progressive policies that have often been shown to work while convincing conservatives that it’s okay when they recklessly overspend. After all, if it isn’t economic recklessness that causes economic chaos, but rather an abstract noun (“socialism”), why shouldn’t right-wingers overspend?
There is a short and relevant history in this country of lefties earnestly attacking the debt and righties blowing it up. They're about to do so again. In most places, public fiscal management isn't ideological. In the US, it is. Time will tell whether that's been a wise move.

The race to be the Democratic nominee for president in 2020 will be a race to the left. The Bernie Sanders agenda has taken root. By the time the Democrats’ nominating process was complete in 2016, Hillary Clinton had become Bernie Sanders-lite. I see the next Democratic nominee as likely to be Sanders on steroids. Fasten yer seat belts...lol...Shut the fuck up Donny!

Socialist whacko>Communist nutjob>Hitlary>Wiz.
LOL @ "Hitlary". Pretty clever. Interestingly enough, 66,600 hits on a Google search, but only 7,000 by the end of 2016. That's a new term, but one good enough to make you wonder why no one thought of it sooner.
If kapture was smart enough to think it through, this would be a major challenge to his theory that the right wing is better at memes. Low-hanging fruit just out there for the taking for close to two decades now, but it only happened once they needed to project a right-wing attribute back onto the left. Interesting.

That's Democratic Socialism in action. Canada features a strategic reserve of maple syrup. We are a resources-driven economy that understands how to do it and won't rely on the invisible hand. Similar to how the Saudis use their dominant-producer status over another type of commodity to control world markets. Proper resource-exporter policy is non-partisan.
In the just passed tax bill opens a tiny sliver of the North Shore to oil and gas exploration with the goal of making the US "export dominant". Tough times for camel jockeys.

Geezer, that post was a joke. Note the context.

We'll see. The camel jockeys can produce at $10/barrel or less. Good luck competing with that profit margin when you're trying to pull from frozen ground.
