  • An interesting article about higher education. Note the statistics about who values "higher education"

    • What happened in 2015 that made 20% of Republican suddenly change their minds?

Hey, I'm all for pushing back on the notion that everyone should go to college. I dont believe that. But there's a whole bunch of reasons why we are where we are and it's hard to summarize without writing a book. Just a few thoughts in no particular order.

      * My dad graduated high in 1968. He's young enough that he could walk out of high school and the next day be hired at an auto plant, making a salary at a union job that most white collar jobs (at the time) couldn't match. That's virtually impossible to do today. My personal belief as to why? It's a combination of business-friendly interests in both parties wanting to bust unions for good and a rapidly changing world as Germany, Japan, and other places completed their recovery from WWII.

      * There are tons of jobs that list college degrees as requirements when they aren't really necessary. For better or worse, college degrees have become common enough that businesses can afford to be choosy.

      * Lots of people both the Left and Right have come to view college as job training when, IMO, it shouldn't be that way.

What needs to happen is cut funding to the universities by 25% and have the faculty go to war to determine what's important, the humanities, or math, science, physics, biology, technology.

        • I'm pretty sure sciences and engineering are already getting the lion's share of the funding at most public schools.

My guess was the University of Missouri protests and BLM.
            __________

As for "fixing" higher ed, the first step IMO is making the colleges guarantee all student loans that are obtained in order to attend their school. I'm only talking about students who take a student loan now:

            1. I think admissions advisors would direct these students to areas where there was some possibility of employment. You would see far fewer Black Studies or Women's Studies, more STEM.
            2. I had the experience of dining at an MSU dining hall a couple months ago. Good Lord, what a spread! I'll just say that shit-on-a-shingle is no more. I bring this up as an example of what colleges are doing to attract students. IMO, if colleges had to pay any unpaid student loan, they would once again focus on costs.

DSL: I agree with you about the "college as job training" issue. I went the classic Liberal Arts way as an undergrad. To graduate, we had to take two years of a foreign language and prove our proficiency. That caused a lot of self-sorting of students who suspected they could not meet that requirement.

It's been pointed out that one of the accusers spoke to the Wash Post. Another filed a lawsuit. Another reached a settlement. That's not coming forward enough for you, Nancy? Pathetic stuff.

She knows she f'd up and has put out a tougher statement after the interview.

Also, Conyers has stepped down from the Judiciary Committee but not resigned yet

We shouldn't be subsidizing a post modernist revolution in this country.

                      • Well, I'm not a Dim, so the Pelosi MTP interview seemed the same as always to me.

However, I do have a grudging admiration for Conyers. He's 88 now, so he was around 85 when he had to pay hush money for sexual overtures. Gotta admire that.

                            • kapture ...... your point?

The first photo is Weinstein and the caption suggests we don't understand male sexualtiy and it's potential brutality. A bit of Oedipus is in there too.

The second photo is of a young male wearing eye make-up and the caption suggesting this behavior is affecting beauty norms.

Not sure I see either as disgusting but I can be a bit a bit literal.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
