      • We've talked enough about rent seeking and monopolists who seek their true competitive advantages in DC and not in any free market setting that I can only conclude that....
Hack, by definition, no monopolist is functioning in a free market setting. That is an oxymoron.

You suggested a few days ago that it doesn't matter that Trump enriches himself on the job. Coming from you that's hard evidence of moral bankruptcy.
Never said I didn't care, but I have chided you for your fixation on Trump making money while in office. I've only said that it is impossible for Trump to avoid accusations of profiting from his position. I have also pointed out that the voters know that Trump is very rich and his holdings are extensive. They voted for him anyway.

Just IMO but he's writing about the symptom, not the cause. The cause is economic. There's capitalism and there's free markets, and they mistakenly viewed as parallel forces rather than zero-sum.
I'd like to have an example of how they are either parallel or zero sum. Please give me an example of what you mean. In truth, free markets are a necessary precondition for capitalism. You have mentioned before that capitalism doesn't necessarily mean free markets. I just don't understand what you mean.

I'd also like to hear more about this "meritocracy of people or ideas" that Bernie and his ilk would bring. What does that phrase mean? Are only the Bernies of the world able to discern the worthy ideas or the worthy people, because that is precisely what you are saying. Socialism in general, and Bernie in particular, seeks equality of outcomes in everything.

              • Sorry, Geezer. I've lost interest in those kinds of exchanges with you. You'd have to come from a saner and fact-based viewpoint. This monopolies thing is just the latest example. The Economist, that bastion of left-wing silliness, wrote 3 times in 2016 about monopolies in the US economy.

Yup. Another case of international relations being made simple by the Talent Truth: Putin controls both _________ and Trump, so it is all Russia's fault.

I understand. Your statements about capitalism and socialism are wrong and utterly indefensible. "Meritocracy of people and ideas" my ass. What makes you tick is that you want equal outcomes imposed by the force of government.

There will never be equality of outcomes because not all humans are equally talented. All are of equal worth, but not of equal ability.

I read both sides with interest here (Hack v. Geezer). I've never met either one of you but through your posts I'm pretty sure I know your ideologies and politics.

If I'm reading Hack correctly, that characterization of him is wrong.

It seems, at times, you tend to argue from the extremes. When someone offers another view you characterize that view (or the poster) as taking an opposite extreme.

                              Just IMO.

                                Doesn't matter. The optics do.

Any sane assessment of the military situation in Syria recognizes that there is no meaningful way for military operations to be undertaken with the intent to remove the Assad led Syrian government from power. Both the logistics and the present geopolitics are huge limiting factors.

I'm not going to argue that Dessert Storm was a good idea. In contrast, though, from a geopolitical, logistical and military perspective and with the the clear intent to topple Saddam, it was a well planned and executed operation. The aftermath did then and still does suck and there are a lot of reasons for that.
