Eh -- maybe it's inertia but I still value the conference title more than the tourney title. So too does the selection committee, based on who got to play in Detroit this year and who got sent out west.
I'm torn. It is more of a grind but when I see every other league do it differently, it's swaying my opinion. The unbalanced schedule isn't fair either. Only one team gets to cut down nets in the conference.
Of course, winning the damn thing two years in a row (and seeing how much it means to the players) also plays a part.
They dominated in 1985. But in both years, the B10 was mostly poop. They didn't get anyone past the S16 and only had 1 team in each year make it that far.

Heh. Well, the B10 SHOULD have had a team reach the Elite 8 in 1986, but your boy Skiles got screwjobbed big time by the Kansas City timekeepers against, unsurprisingly, Kansas.
I always liked Skiles. But, meh -- that wasn't a particularly good B10. I mean, Alford got Cleveland State'd.

Say what you will, but they don't have a meaningless regular-season slog. They also don't have Game 7s. Those two things cancel each other out, probably. Although if basketball could get its act together and play 20 less games, or even 10 or 15, that'd be great.
Soccer gets the best of both worlds, IMO. A complete round robin home and home to determine the league champion and a tournament to determine the Cup champion. The FA Cup final is more watched than the Super Bowl (I think), and they also have their weekend round of games that provides some huge upsets. And relegation.
For hoops I’d definitely use the Scottish model. Maybe break it into East and West. 12 game round robin. Top 2 from each advance to top group to play round robin. 18 total league games. With other lower groups formed.

Wow. For the first time in recorded history someone has either said, typed or thought the words ``I'd definitely use the Scottish model'' for something other than brawling.
He only took 2.2 3-point shots a game, so making less than one isn't a surprise. 34% is still decent for a 6'9" 245 lb. guy in that era. He was better from 3 than Jalen and Ray that year...though Ray seemingly made 1 every other game with his toes just over the line.
