Bowling Green was talking about possibly dropping hockey a few years ago and would've been the first national title winner to do so. Then they got a big bailout donation recently and are upgrading their rink. But now it looks like CCHA may be dead in a few years. I don't see why Notre Dame will stick around with the weird directional Michigan schools and BG. W/o them, Miami will probably consider moving and by then the conference will officially be toast.
I think it's possible college hockey could fall behind lacrosse in a decade or so. Lacrosse is much cheaper, has a lot more scoring, and isn't a cold weather game the way hockey is. Right now though I think slightly more schools have hockey programs.
Your correct that college hockey with its large ice arena is an expensive sport for schools. Which is why you see so many schools not having a college program right now and why its unlikely other schools, even B10 schools, start a college hockey program.
In unrelated NHL news there's apparently going to be a massive makeover in divisions starting with the 2012-13 season. Atlanta moving to Winnipeg has made that division nonsensical. According to reports both the Red Wings and Columbus want in the Eastern Conference.
The return of the Winnipeg Jets to the NHL will create a ripple effect throughout the league as multiple sources report that a dramatic realignment will take place for the 2012-13 season.
I know that to be true. I've stopped by Yost a couple times during the day, and went inside. Sure enough, they had youth leagues playing both times. Little bitty kids. It was fun to watch. I wish the MHSAA would play the Hockey State Finals there.
I don't always roll a joint, but when I do, its usually my ankle
That is the problem with these types of buildings, you need to hold as many events as physically possible to make them viable. I am assuming that lacrosse will be played at Yost, which will help a little more.

There are politics involved and Compuware seems to be the venue of choice for the MHSSA, however, with a newly revamped Yost Arena, the possibility of that happening could be strong if Brandon were to lobby hard for it.
I long for a Lions team that is consistently competitive.
Not sure where the collegiate level is played but most professional lacrosse is played in hockey arenas and is called box lacrosse. It's much closer to hockey than field lacrosse - more checking, more equipment, smaller nets
Major Indoor Lacrosse. That's fairly entertaining to watch. I recall Detroit had a really good team for a while that played at Joe Louis. The college game is not played that way, however.
1) NMU is fleeing the CCHA for the WCHA, effective the 2013-2014 season. The Wildcats' application to re-join the WCHA was unanimously approved by that conference, allowing NMU to return to the conference they had been a member of until 1997, when they switched to the CCHA.
I'm not at all surprised, folks----with the startup of Big Ten Hockey (meaning no more U of M, msu, and ohio) and subsequent speculation over ND looking for a new conference hockey affiliation, it's just a matter of time until everyone else jumps off the sinking ship of CCHA hockey.
2) Michigan's 2011-2012 Hockey schedule has been announced:

Please take note of 3 particular home hockey weekends during which we also have Meeeeeeechigan Football at The Big House:
---Ferris State is in town Homecoming weekend, with Thursday (10/27) and Friday (10/28 games @ Yost, followed by Purdue @ Michigan Football on Saturday , 10/29.
---O-lie-o State is @ Michigan for a pair on Friday and Saturday, 11/18th & 19th, combining with Nebraska's first visit to The Big House on Nov. 19.
---and the following weekend, when we play the castrated nuts on 11/26 at Michigan Stadium, we have a couple of non-conference home games: Friday night (11/25) vs. Northeastern, and Sunday (11/27) vs. Union (NY) College.
I plan on looking into tickets ASAP for at least a visit or 2 to Yost Ice Arena on those weekends as soon as ticket go on sale. As of right now MGoBlue.com isn't showing any info on when that might be, but you M-Borgers would be wise to give Michigan Hockey a look, if you haven't done so already! I tell you, there's nothing like a combination Michigan Football and Hockey Weekend!
