  • Ouch. UMD had the fresher legs throughout the third period, so I suppose it's no surprise they got the goal early in overtime, but still, that one hurts.

        • shame to see it end like that, our guys played their hearts out, but hockey is a funny game, decided so often by a bounce or two here or there of that unpredictable little puck.

As questionable as several of the calls were----especially that 1st goal that didn't get counted---, in the end, it was our own mistakes----3 iceing calls over about less than a minute, I think----that prevented us from getting some very tired skaters off the ice. Give M/D credit for attacking to keep our tired guys on the ice, it resulted in the winning goal for the Bulldogs

            • Oh well ... that sucked.

Probably won't be back there any time soon either.

But, they probably went farther than they were supposed to. And, they set the NCAA record for attendance at the Big Chill.

Yes, a good year overall. No title, but as I posted a few weeks back, I didn't think they were capable of even getting to the Frozen Fourl considering their lack of offensive firepower, especially once Wohlberg broke his collarbone just before the playoffs. In time, the team will look back at their successes and savor them, but the pain of this final loss will never go away for the seniors.

They likely won't be as good a team next season, as they lose a lot of seniors and maybe even a few juniors to the NHL; there are a lot on underclassmen (Frosh and sophs) on the team; and who will be in the net? This could be a very good, very dangerous team, though, in 2 years, if a good young goaltender emerges.

                • The number of goals that are fucked up by the officials in both college hockey and the NHL is just astronomical. Can you think of another sport where that huge of a percentage of all scoring is fubared by the officials? I mean, we all know college basketball officiating is bad, and yet I bet it affects FAR less of the scoring in basketball than hockey officials screw up.

They needed to do away with the "intent to blow" rule years ago. It's just a horrible, horrible rule. If the puck goes in before you blew your whistle, IT SHOULD BE A GOAL. It isn't the team's fault that you are a blind fool that can't find the puck. I don't even know why the asshole reviewed the play--the review CLEARLY showed the puck in the net before he blew the whistle. He was going to rule it a no-goal no matter what because he "intended" it to not be a goal, no matter what really happened. I mean, how many years in a row do we have to watch this call fuck up the NHL playoffs AND the NCAA playoffs before someone realizes "hey, this is fucking up games every year. Maybe we need a better rule?"

That all being said, UMD outplayed Michigan and clearly had them on their heels in the OT. Who knows what would have happened if they had properly counted Michigan's 1st goal. It would have been a different game, but there is no guarantee Michigan would have won.

                  • There's that, and the fact that Michigan was defending the power play for a third of the game. That takes away from your offensive scoring chances.

I wonder if I can get away with "I intended to blow the whistle" in my next football game?

                    • Michigan deserved a lot of the penalties they got. The only 2 calls that I thought were BS just happened to be the last 2. I'm way more pissed about yet another "intent to blow" screw up than the penalty calls. UMD got at least one very questionable penalty too, and maybe 2 (ESPN never showed the replay). Michigan took some dumb penalties.

They put on so little offensive pressure even 5-on-5 that I don't think you can blame penalties for the loss. One of Michigan's best offensive chances all night came on the penalty kill. They just didn't play well. UMD was dominating the OT before the goal--Michigan just couldn't get the puck.

                      • IMO they should change the stupid "intent to blow" rule to Only apply in situations where the official tried to blow his whistle and it didn't work or something stupid like that. This idea that a player can be scoring into the net and because the official is out to lunch he can retroactively call the play dead without even having blown his whistle is just ridiculous.

Also the article says the ref claims he blew the whistle BEFORE Hagelin hit the puck. Which means he is either one of the all-time idiots in the universe who can't even manage to get things right watching a replay (since the replay clearly showed that not only did Hagelin hit the puck BEFORE the whistle blew, but it was IN THE NET before the whisle blew) or he is just a complete liar.

                          • By the way, the asshole in question is Tim Benedetto from Hockey East. It was a Hockey East official who boned Michigan with the "intent to blow" rule last year too.

I found a thread on him on a BC board.

I can't comment on Hockey East officials in general, but every high profile HEA game I watch is ruined by Tim Benedetto.

He's horrific. I'm pretty sure he thinks he gets paid per penalty minute.

And really, they let Benedetto officiate another important game? What the fuck?

Tim Benedetto thinks he is the show and everyone is there to see him ref. Every time he refs. Its pathetic. It sucks. It is a shame. It actually embarasses me that the NCAA and Hockey East allow it to go on year in and year out. The worst part about it, is that he gets assigned all the big games like this one because he has the most tenure.

Based on the number of blatent jabs at Benedetto on here, UMass doesn't like him very much either. Sounds like the guy is just a really crappy ref.

Please note, I'm not claiming Michigan played well enough to win, because they didn't. UMD played better. I'm just tired of having 33% of our scoring disallowed in every big game because an official is out to lunch.

                            • That "intent to blow" thing is interesting. It sounds like an official can blow the play dead if he can't see the puck. In football, that's the time we stay away from our whistles. In fact, one of the last things we do, before we trot to our positions before the kickoff, is we say, "see leather". In other words, see the ball.

And before you hockey experts rip me a new one on this, I understand that hockey has to be called differently, otherwise you'd have guys slapping away at the goalie with their sticks, trying to jam the puck in the goal. That particular rule, is obviously there to protect the goalie, or a player whom the puck has slipped under.

Still, that's a lot of responsibility for one man, who can decide the outcome of the game with one toot of his whistle. Especially when its not reviewable.

Based on what those fans are saying that Jamie quoted, it sounds like that ref is Hockey East's answer to Steve Uselesscheck and Frank Patina.

                              • He intended to blow and he, indeed, blows.

I didn't catch a ton of the game (being at work but working at a sports bar) but saw a replay of the first goal that wasn't and then caught the game-winner live.

Great effort by the team. It's a shame they didn't get to win it all.

Also, that mock interview video was great. Somebody at least has a future in improv if not pro-hockey.
