  • And speaking of Big Ten hockey, OSU is in first with 42 points (allegedly). I come up with 41 for them, the Big Ten website says they have 43, and USCHO and College Hockey Inc. both have them at 42. Michigan has 39 points even though the Big Ten website is missing an OT loss in their calculation and shows the Wolverines with 38 points.

Last week, the 3 sources I checked all had different point totals for the contenders but this week USCCO and CHI both match so I'm going with their numbers given the obvious error on the Big Ten's OWN SITE.

Why the dependency? Well you see, the Big Ten thought it would be a good idea to have 6 (SIX) different classifications of game results. Because Big Ten.

OSU's line is 13-5-2-1-1-1. That's: Wins, losses, ties, OT wins, OT losses, Shootout wins. The games that complete the OT period without a goal scored are classified as ties per the NCAA's records for teams and coaches because leagues differ among how they award points. In the Big Ten a regulation win is 3 points, OT and shootout wins are 2 points, OT and shootout losses are 1 point, and a regulation loss is 0 points. The OW-OL-SW records are accounted for in the W-L-T record.

So as you can clearly see, Ohio State has 42 points... or 43... or maybe even 41.

Michigan has 39 and two games in hand but we're missing our best guys for 4 games against MSU and OSU. Yay.

          • A question for you hockey guys, who understand hockey. This may be a head-slapping "duh" question, but here goes...

When you're protecting a 1 (or more) goal lead, and the opposing team pulls its goalie for the extra attacker, why aren't you allowed to 'ice' the puck to get at least a temporary relief from the extra pressure? Seems to me, if my team is trailing, and I pull my goalie for the extra attacker, I should understand if I'm giving the other team the ability to 'ice' the puck to relieve the pressure.

            Your thoughts?

            • All iceing rules are the same when the goaltenders are pulled Liney. It's when your SH you can ice the puck as much as you want, till your back at full strength. That may be what your thinking. Teams will pull the Goaltender when a penalty has been called and play continues, till the team penalized touchs the puck. But iceing rule are still the same.

              • Ah, okay. Maybe that's where I got confused.

I was watching the end of the USA v Germany game and the krauts pulled their goalie for about the last 2 minutes, and USA was hit with icing about 3 times. I thought if a team had an extra attacker that the defending team could ice the puck to break the pressure.

USA won 3-2 and won their division. They'll play again on Wednesday, I believe.

                • If a team pulls their goalie, it’s still 6 on 6. Hence, not being able to ice the puck.

                  • Michigan slapped Sparty around again last night 7-3 at LCA. Michigan swept all 4 games against those pukes this season.

Minnesota swept OSU, dropping the Buckeyes to 3rd place.

                    Current standings:

                    Michigan - 45
                    Minnesota - 43
                    OSU - 42

                    • Sparty had to give up that trophy that goes with the season win thing. Good.

Right I was going to ad that and the caffeine started wearing off, its the same amount of players for both teams.

USA icing the puck 3 times with the goaltender pulled is typically not good play, it stops the clock, and bring the face off right back into your end, but it happens a lot. If the defensemen hasn't the time to flip the puck over the blue line or pass (or try to score into the empty net). Unless you're Patrick Roy, teams will pull the goalie starting around the 2:00 minute mark - or less until they get control of the puck. Now if you want to know what 'offsides' is let me know Liney

MSU, has lost 10 straight, while Michigan have won nine of 10. No. 8 Ohio State next Friday and Saturday

                        • I've been able to figure out offsides, but another one I've had trouble with is on a score, when they try to figure out if it went in off a skate, or if it goes in while a skate is 'in the crease"...

How did they ever play hockey before slo motion replay?

                          • Yes that is actually the most common type of play that is reviewed by video. A player can skate through the crease and even score (off the skate) as long as the referee does not consider it a kicking motion into the net or (obstruct or impede) the movement of the goaltender.
