Predicting the spread or final score in the Bama v. M bowl game is nearly impossible given that we may not know who will actually suit up and play until we see who lines up on O or D to start the game. Michigan's list of likely and possible opt-outs is long. DeBoer has said he expects most of the Alabama players will play.
I have no idea how the M coaches will scheme and who will practice as 1s. I feel pretty certain that the final M roster is going to be unrecognizable from the one that featured players who either were or became starters during the regular season. As Mike said up thread, it's a spring game/live practice type game. When M either out of necessity or late in the game to get new guys snaps featured the 2s and 3s, the drop off was steep. Given that those are the guys who will probably play and Bama may not experience critical player opt-outs, at its face, its going to be an embarrassing bloodbath.
Speaking of which, Hoke faced Saban in Arlington Texas at Jerry's World, September 1st, 2012 and lost 41-14. Denard was the QB but I think he had already suffered nerve damage to his throwing arm. Michigan looked badly undermanned and coached. I was at this game. I suspect the results will be similar - you'd think I was a glutton for punishment. But, I wanted to see shoe-lace play in 2012 at Jerry's World and in the case of this years game, even knowing there'd be opt-outs, I wanted to see if Moore could manage a team at 1/2 strength, missing his 2024 stars and relying on freshman and sophomores...... a preview of the 2025 season
Thinking about that I'm actually going to attend on the 31st. I'll take an early regional carrier from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa Uber or Lyft to/from the game and depart the same day. Economy prices were cheap 10 days ago when I first checked, they've now doubled. Must be some M fans in south FL creating demand.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

Here's a piece on who has declared for the NFL draft and almost certainly will not play, those considering declaring, and if they do, will be unlikely to play, transfers via the portal and won't be available. Portends a train wreck of a football team:

Looks like M is going to have to start 2nd teamers and maybe dip into 3rd string.
What a joke of a bowl game. Not worth watching. The only value coming out of this will be the 14 practices leading up to the game where the new kids can start learning the process."The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, .. I'd worn them for weeks, and they needed the air"

I have no idea why any M fan would buy a ticket to see this game.
Second, its an opportunity to get some focus on an important question going forward, how good of coach is Sherrone Moore and Wink Martindale? Playing in this bowl game v. a very good football team in Alabama under the circumstances he WInk and their staffs will have to deal with is going to be a big tell on Moore's and Wink's cred as M's HC/DC. Wink deserved and got credit for M's defense v. OSU. Can he replicate that success against Milroe with the players he'll have? A description of what he did and how he did it is here - and it was more about excellent player execution than scheme:

Bottom line is that Wink put his defenders in positions that optimized their skill sets and put them in positions to succeed. If he can replicate the coaching skills demonstrated by his work v. OSU v. Alabama he's going to be great in 2025.
Third, I can get a feel for who is going to start in next fall's opener outside of the QB. The OL and DL are critical to 2025 success - more so than whoever starts at QB. Same for the DBs. I'm uncertain which players among those that portal and have been offered by M will or can play. Both the QB and DT positions need the best players M can buy. Jury is still out on both. Here's a primer:
EDGEPROBABLES: TJ Guy (Sr.*), Cam Brandt (Jr.), Breeon Ishmail (So.*), Aymeric Koumba (So.*), Ludgard Edokpayi (Fr.*), Dominic Nichols (So.), Devon Baxter (Fr.*), Nate Marshall (Fr.), Benny Patterson (Fr.), Julius Holly (Fr.)MAYBE: Derrick Moore (Sr.), Kechaun Bennett (Sr.*)Moore looks like a fringe NFL draft prospect, with PFN and Draft Buzz projecting him mid-to-late on day three. This is a scenario that would often induce a guy to enter in the pre-NIL era; nowadays staying in school can be more compelling. A fifth-rounder gets a four-year deal that's about one million per year, which is a number a program like Michigan can match or at least get close to, particularly with House expected to be in effect this fall. His return would give Michigan two very solid options at DE, as Guy should be a quality Big Ten starter as a senior. Behind the presumed starters Michigan has Cam Brandt, who seems to be tracking towards being a solid rotation guy but not a star, and a lot of lottery tickets. If Moore goes Michigan needs an experienced, starter-quality end. If he stays they should probably still be interested in a guy with two or three years of eligibility left who would provide a higher floor than Michigan's collection of high-upside question marks from the last few classes.Michigan has not been linked to anyone yet unless you count Zahir Mathis, a high school recruit who decommitted from OSU and is scheduled to be on campus this weekend.[After THE JUMP: Michigan's portal QB coming into focus]Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished.
