  • My gut feel on Ryan Day as a Michigan fan is that he probably shouldn't be fired. It would represent the ultimate extreme of firing a guy solely because of his record against his rivals. Remember what OSU fans used to say about "8-3 Earle?" I feel like history has looked unkindly upon the Earl firing. CRD is "double digit win Day". Do you fire an 11-2 guy? You've got to have a lot of confidence in your overall program to fire that guy. In this case, that confidence is probably justified. But still -- every new coach brings in unknowns and CRD is not even close to rock bottom. I dunno. I can't relate. UM is not in a position to consider firing a guy who pulls in Top 5 recruiting classes every year and goes 11-2.

    • Reminds me of the1996 game. With John Cooper having the #2 team that was loaded vs. almost unranked UM team and Michigan eeked out a 13-9 ugly game like this. Coop just couldn't beat us and same for Day.

      • But this rivalry means everything apparently…

Some are calling for Ryan Day to be fired now, but I don’t know. It might make sense to see what Ohio State does in the CFP. They can still win a championship, but no B1G title and the seeding is likely not going to be a cakewalk now. Such as getting the #5 seed, a home game vs Iowa State (example) and then Boise State in round 2. Some nonsense like that path.

        • I rather enjoyed reading the Debbie Downer posts as the 4th quarter wound down with a 10-10 tie holding and both offenses doing nothing. But M won this game by outrsuing OSU just like 22 of 23 meetings between M and OSU have been decided. To that end, M rushed for 172y, 116 of those yards by Mullings. Credit to the coaching staff for scheming/planning to pound the rock - not enough credit given to the OL for executing and the coaches for putting the offense in a position to win. Instead the Michigan peanut gallery gallery whined. A 20 point underdog, on the road, was navigated to this incredible win by scheming then executing a great game plan. Pretty sure like on the other sideline, Moore was calling the plays - it is this kind of game where the plays he called (probably??called not Campbell) were situationally the right ones. Fans hate it when rock-fights like this are played. OSU got booed on several offensive series and, IMO deservedly. M fans did thier booing with posts (I'm not even going to read mgo board).

No question in my mind that Day shit the bed. His play calling, and I really think he was making the offensive play calls, failed miserably to advantage OSU's strength throwing to receivers outside, and the cluster fuck he was responsible for as the clock ran down rivals the Bear's Matt Eberflus clock management. He got fired. Not my call but if it was, man, I'd fire CRD before he got to his office. Michigan is in his head, the monkey is on his back and he's not the right coach to get past that. There are mitigating circumstances in particular the OL situation. That was a screaming weakness that did OSU in but the scheme and play calling just added to it instead of hiding it.

The post game fracas was a bad look both sides. TBF, it looked like to me that M started it by trying to plant the M flag midfield on the OSU O. It is a thing that is done. So, there is that. Mullings in an on-field post game interview said even given that, the best players know how to lose. OSU Players should have cleared the field. Mullings added, you fight for four quarters, not after the game is decided and you lost. Perfect. Their program and their fans will suffer another 365 days of ignominy. Fuck OSU.

          • That look of bewilderment from Day during the scuffle is telling. It shows that he’s terrible at damage control. That makes him worse than Cooper - who at least exercised class when after those bizarre losses in the mid 90s. And yes, that 1996 was every bit as bizarre as this one.

If he finishes 10-3 I think he could be fired. Over 50% chance. Thinking about it more we also have a brand new AD with no attachment to Day. An AD that has not always made great decisions at his last jobs.

                • I forgot to tip my hat to Wink Martindale. He too designed a great defensive scheme. not too much but just enough clever pressure defenses. OSU's OL was exploitable and the backers took advantage of the weak RT while Graham and Grant harassed OSU's interior OL to good effect. Howard looked confused on the majority of his drop backs. That's on Wink and how he hides his coverages and blitzes. He gets an A+.He also put his supposedly weak CBs and Ss in great positions, harassing OSU's NFL bound receivers and picking off Howard twice.

So, yeah, M played a classic complementary football game when it needed one. The O did just enough in the rush game to back up and cover up Warren's throwing issues (2 pics). Meanwhile Wink's D was making it hard for what heretofore was a talented, high output offense. OSU was forced to react to M's game rather than making M play the game on OSU's terms.

But what I will say is this. Don't anyone EVER doubt the HEART of these kids who have played Michigan Football since 2021. They've WRONGLY been called "cheaters" and their many wins have all been totaled up to "cheating". Especially by OSU fans. That, has now been PROVEN to be TOTAL BULLSHIT. They've won these games, especially against Ohio State, because THEY PLAYED BETTER FOOTBALL. Period. Mic drop. Point the finger straight at yourselves Ohio State. That guy in the mirror. When Ohio State plays better football than Michigan does, they'll win again.

                      There are no more excuses.

I wasn't here to see the game. I'm keying it up on DVR. I'll watch and come back later.

                      • Ohio is soft.

Michigan won the 4th quarter in four consecutive matchups.

Day is 1-4 against Michigan and 47-1 against the rest of the BIG. He won't get fired, but this will dog him the rest of his career.

Hint: Watch Mullings scoring from 2y out after Amir Hall got an IINT at OSU's 13 and ran it to the 2. Fast forward to Zavada's 54y FG. Then fast forward to the last 1:29 on M's last possession after Day's screw up with time outs, watch M burn clock, then hand it over to Zaveda who kicks a 21y FG to go up 13-10.

The rest of the game was boring as hell.

                            • The 4th quarter was great actually now that we know that the INT didn't cost us the game.

What's interesting about this factoid regarding winning the 4th is that has been a cultural shift that started with Harbaugh and continues with Moore. You play until the last second ticks off the clock. There were multiple opportunities in the 2nd half for M to tank. They didn't. They did the best the could with a lot of injury adversity on the roster. That's become a cornerstone of M culture and is likely to continue if this game is any indication of that.
