Even outside of The Game, flag planting has become a rather common occurrence after a big win on a rival opponents home field. That flag planting act by M players, as common as it has become, should not have resulted in the reaction by OSU players. They lost, leave the field. Let the victors celebrate.

Sure, it could be considered disrespectful and could be called out as inappropriate but those doing that don't understand the intensity of this rivalry and the kind of emotions associated with winning or losing. I'm fine with the BIG quietly issuing fines to both teams as a deterrent to doing flag planting but leave it at that.

Obviously some don’t agree and that confuses me knowing the fans involved.

You are at someone else’s house. The game is over. Michigan had no business lingering around in Ohio Stadium and certainly had no business planting M flags in the Buckeye’s turf.

The opinion that it’s Ohio State’s fault because they didn’t quietly exit their own field so some classless Michigan players can shit on sportsmanship and play act as conquistadors is absolutely insane.

It’s a bad look and bad things happen when otherwise classy teams devolve into becoming the BigTen’s version of the Miami Hurricanes. The fact that some M fans are defending this is fucking mind blowing. There is no reasonable defense. None.

Anyway, congrats on the big win that isn’t getting talked about. All that’s being discussed is whether the Michigan Hurricanes are very classless or extremely classless.

And NC State tried the same thing at UNC. And, yeah, a fight broke out. This is a dangerous, classless fad.

    Your mileage obviously varies.

    • It doesn't take an ill-advised flag planting for those CFB fans who consider Michigan to be "classless". They didn't like Michigan to begin with. They don't need anything else to hate us for.

That being said, I think if Bo Schembechler were still around today, he'd be rip-roaring mad at any Michigan player who participated in the flag thing. He wouldn't wait for the NCAA or the B1G to take action, he'd just start kicking ass himself in the locker room. He'd never have allowed that stuff in Columbus or anywhere.

And Woody would have never allowed his team to do it to Michigan, either.

Those were different days and times.

I've seen winning Ohio State teams stay on the field at Michigan Stadium for nearly 30 minutes or more, after a win. They sing about a girl named Carman,-- sing their alma mater, .. sing their fight song about 10 times, run all over the stadium thumping their chests, .. and just generally being obnoxious. Their dumb little bucknut-head goes all over taunting every Michigan fan who has stayed to watch the Michigan Marching band do a post game show, (which they do, win or lose) .. so little Bucky Bucknut gets his jollies by taunting mostly band parents. I've seen this with my own eyes.

      That being said

I guess if you can't take it, don't do it. They behave badly on our field. Every time they come here. In 1973, they came out on the field, and tore down the "Go Blue The M Club Supports You" sign. Because of that incident, they are not allowed to run straight out onto the field anymore. They are forced to go over to the south endzone.

So if Michigan behaved badly yesterday, .. maybe some folks consider it to be justified payback.

      • Both Michigan and Ohio State have been fined $100,000 each for yesterdays skirmish following the game.

Both fines will be paid in the form of contributions to each athletic department by deep-pocketed alums.

So basically, no harm no foul to both schools.

        • Perfect and appropriate. Now move along. Nothing to see here besides a monumental win for Michigan against hated rival Ohio State.

          • So the two takeaways are..

            1) Other teams do it too so M should as well?

            and

            2) We are only fined $100,000 for classlessness but Ohio State got the same fine so it’s all good?

            Fuck me.

              1. I don't think Michigan needed to take a cue from any other team to plant a flag. Its been done twice to Michigan this season in Ann Arbor, and neither team was penalized. Or considered "classless".

              2. The B1G chose the penalty. They chose to fine both teams the same amount. It should be obvious by now that Michigan has absolutely no control over what actions that the conference takes against them. Classlessness or not.

Reference: Jim Harbaugh being forced to sit 1/2 of a season (six games) for buying a kid a hamburger, and having Connor Stallions on his staff.

              • I don't remember what year it was, but Schembechler was still coaching. Florida State came to Michigan twice, and we split with them. We won the first game, and they returned a couple years later, and beat us.

Long after the game was over, it was discovered that on their way out of the stadium, several Florida State players returned to the field, and ripped up several strips of Michigan turf (grass) and took them back as some sort of "prize". Seems FSU has a graveyard of sorts where they bury pieces of grass that they've removed when they win there. There was several hundred dollars worth of damage to the field. That was a lot of money back then.

Nothing was done to FSU or Bobby Bowden's boys. It was all in good fun, I'm sure.

I said when Simmons went down it was devastating. When McClaughlin got hurt it was absolutely impossible to deal with. OL is the one position where OSU had zero depth and the one position where they've had injuries. You can paper it over against IU, but M actually has NFL players up front. So, M could sit back with two safeties, give OSU a "run" look and still stone them. The playcalling was still a total disaster -- throwing into pass looks was a much better option than running with an interior OL that had zero chance against M's DTs.

Even so, it was a game OSU should have won 4 times out of 5. So many things. Even before M's final drive -- Carnell Tate straight up drops a first down conversion on 2nd down that gets OSU out to the 30. Then Howard comes up a yard short on next play. Then Mullings should have been completely wrapped up at the 40 on the final drive. Is what it is.

When I was younger it would have really bothered me, but eh -- it sucked for a day.

OSU has no chance in the playoff w/ their OL.

I'm 50/50 on whether CRD returns. My guess is they'll be backroom shopping for someone really good, but if they can't find someone they love they'll ride out one more year.

The upside is that this cements Sherrone Moore for a really long time.

                    • From the Athletic:

The conference determined the schools violated the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy. The policy in the Big Ten’s bylaws is broadly written, requiring members to show “civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials” around competitions. The policy also gives broad power to the commissioner and league office to dole out penalties if it is violated.

“Not only did the actions of both teams violate fundamental elements of sportsmanship such as respect and civility, the nature of the incident also jeopardized the safety of participants and bystanders,” the conference said in a statement. “
The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.”

Note there is nothing about flag planting per se. Just an oblique, between the lines suggestion that it is unsportsmanlike. Also of note is that the fine is for the brawl and failure of both coaching staffs to prevent it.

There is no indication that the conference or the NCAA will chose to create a rule that bans flag planting. All the hand waving about this specific event and none of it about the other three flag planting events that took place last weekend or the numerous times in the past that flag planting has happened is telling. It happens. There is no CFB rivalry as big as this one between OSU and M. Victories like M achieved in this intense and heated rivalry begets an earned celebration. The flag planting was just that. The brawl that followed was entirely on the OSU players that chose to confront the victors.

Kalel Mullings had this to say about the brawl: “They gotta learn how to lose man. “You can’t be fighting and stuff just because you lost a game. We had 60 minutes, four quarters to do all that fighting and now people want to talk and fight? “That’s wrong. Bad for the game and classless in my opinion.

BTW, Mr. Talent, how was the tailgate........

                        • I did not see Doug. TBH, it was so fucking cold that once we got our tents set up, side panels attached and heating shit turned on, the only cause for exiting was to piss. And, to be honest, I sort of forgot until about 1030. So, yeah, not great on my part.

The tailgate was awesome. It's still one of my favorite mornings. Even when it was roughly 10 degree wind chill -- maybe colder. But, yeah -- lots of food, reasonably warm -- friends I've known forever. So, good morning. Until I had to watch OSU run offense.
