Moore will have the players psyched and embracing the hate. I wouldn't want to be a Fresno State player facing M's OL or the DL in the trenches. Most of this team is experienced and brings what turned out, during the 2023 campaign, to be a team with a lot of physicality. They'll bring that same intensity to the 2024 season opener v. Fresno State.
I don't think it matters who starts at QB. In the early going when it counts, M will make plays, Fresno State won't. Moore is going to keep most of the offense under wraps and will have OC Kirk Campbell probably calling a conservative game. Campbell said in an early August interview about fall camp that, "we're playing QBs from old to new." If there's been a player position that we know little about from camp and absolutely nothing about who will start, that would be QB. We'll probably see multiple guys under center if M has the game in hand. Because Moore runs a run-centric offense, and for no other reason, Orji will get the first offensive series for M. I'd be more than surprised to see Davis Warren starting.
Wink Martindale going all Don Brown on defense has been put to rest. Expect a lot of exotic looks, a lot of pressure form various spots on the D and Fresno State having trouble keeping their QB, Mikey Keene, upright. As in the trenches, Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, as well as a third player, Rayshaun Benny will do the damage. But Wink continues to employ a lot of rotation to keep players ready and fresh to dominate in the 4th quarter. That means guys with names none of us have ever heard about will be rotating at DE and Edge. I'll be paying more attention to M's defense in this game than M's offense which is likely to be boringly efficient with a few booming big runs against a Fresno State D that will sell out to stop the run. Sprinkle in a few deep throws to keep the receiver room happy and that will be M's offense.
During the competitive portion of the game, M will score in the neighborhood of 34 points while holding Fresno State to a FG. The predicted final score and accounting for garbage time: M 41 Fresno State 13.Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.Comment
