Wings posted in the M football 2023 thread but I think he meant to post it here but he echoes the current narrative: to beat UAT, you have to spy Milroe. That's partly right but if your defense schemes to commit defenders to spy Milroe, you lose 1-2 players that could be better deployed elsewhere probably blitzing. Think Sanistril running the nickel blitz or "lightening."
The link below is an excellent breakdown of Milroe's strengths as a runner and how 6 other teams schemed when they played Alabama. Only Texas got a victory. Since that loss UAT has excelled winning 11 straight then beating UGA in the SEC Championship. Milroe was not great in the first 5 ok in game 6 and once Reese figured out how to deploy him, key in the rest of UAT's wins.
There's not just one defensive scheme or concept that will keep Milroe from taking over the game v. M. Doing one thing exclusively to contain Milroe is a sure way to loose. See why teams that did that, like LSU, in the link. At the macro level, one of Minter's goals is to keep Milroe from getting into the open field especially to the field side. Another goal, related, is to force Milroe into tacklers.
Reese, UAT's OC, likes Zone Reads to the boundary but lately not exclusively and Reese did just the opposite of that, Zone Read to the field side v. UGA. Milroe got some chunk plays doing that and Reese kept calling that play until UGA adjusted to it. A great example of UAT breaking tendencies. Edges have to do one thing and one thing only. Hold the edge. Alabama's offense and Milroe in particular, are both sensitive to interior pressure. M can bring that and delivering it consistently will be a key
All of this and more is in the link:
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
