Seth at mgo does another Neck Sharpies article on Neb's 3-3-5 Stack. One salient point Seth makes is that he worries that JH will "go big" (meaning 12 Personnel) and try to clobber the lighter bodies in the 3-3-5. The 3-3-5 Stack is designed to optimize an opponent's lighter defenders v. heavy guys by using speed and disguises to make it hard for the OL and the QB to make appropriate pre-snap and post snap reads as the play develops.
According to Seth, the way to beat the 3-3-5 is to punish the aggressiveness inherent in this defense with both OZ runs and a heavy dose of PA (quick throw off PA due to windy conditions) and plenty of screens. I don't think it was without consideration that M would face 3-3-5 Stack defenses in conference play that their first two games the offense was almost 100% a OZ/IZ offense with a heavy dose of PA. The post game thought was that the M OL is built for gap not zone blocking, weren't terribly good at OZ (consistently missing blocking assignments) with predictable results. Lots of short gains on the ground because missed blocking assignments led to defenders in running lanes at or barely beyond the LOS supposedly developed with the stretch. IZ plays weren't executed much better. In games 3 and 4, M returned to gap blocking, less PA, more RO and the run game looked better - not great but, at least better. The way for M to beat itself is for JH and SM to go heavy sets and gap block. Neb's 3-3-5 is a well practiced and effective defense v. that approach and will eat it up.
With Michigan's non-conference schedule behind them I thought we'd look ahead to their next Big Ten opponent, and their interesting defensive system. Nebraska's new defensive coordinator Tony White runs a Rocky Long 3-3-5. We've come across this defense before—even installed a version of it 14 years ago. A different branch of it is the basis of the TCU and Ohio State defenses that felt frustrating to play against despite Michigan putting up loads of points in those games. The Nebraska edition—the 3-3-5 stack—is about as pure of a 3-3-5 as you're going to find in today's modern, Everybody's Multiple age. And it's hard to argue with White's results with it thus far. Bill Connelly has them 28th in defensive SP+ this year, up from 61st in 2022. They're already up to 14 sacks after finishing with 21 and 20 the last two seasons, and are holding opponents to just 5.02 YPA (sacks included) passing and 3.32 YPC (sacks removed) on the ground. In their four games, the defense should have led to a victory at Minnesota, kept them in the Colorado game, and defeated a pair of G5 teams despite offensive struggles. Where's this coming from? Everywhere. [AFTER THE JUMP: Stack is back]Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
