There's been some speculation that Corum could return for the semis v. TCU. I want to explore that. First, I think it's pretty well assured Corum suffered a "bone bruise to his left knee." I've detailed what that means and suggested that he didn't quickly return indicates the bruise is deeper suggesting a periosteal (deep bone tissue) hematoma of the lateral femoral condyle. Ok, two weeks later v. Purdue, he's not playing. This suggest that conservative Physical Therapy - the standard of care for a bone ruse, even a deep one into the periosteal tissues of the bone - didn't do a whole lot.
Fine. What next? There are two approaches her that probably apply: (1) arthroscopic repair of any tendinous damage to the attachment point (the origin) of the gastroc muscle to the lateral femoral condyle. (2) Decompression of a periosteal hematoma. Option one portends a 3-4 w rehab and return to competition. Option two involves drilling holes and a 6 moth recovery time frame. In an athlete with NFL potential and the millions that go along with that, you're going to want to get this right. I don't have access to the MRIs whihc would be definitive.
Based on comments floating around the infosphere and Corum's tweet that the operation was a success, there's a good chance that option (1) is the surgical intervention that was required and undertaken. OTH. M orthopods are conservative with the intent of providing long term assurances that the athletes value to the NFL are preserved. Obviously, I just don't know - not enough medical information available. IMO, it would be a surprise if Corum were available to play v. TCU let alone if M wins and ends up facing UGA or OSU in for the NC.
So, the safe bet is he's done and is not going to play in the post season. Which brings us to Edwards. He's been a huge surprise given he's playing with his non-dominant hand in a protective cast. This limtis his biggest attribute - he's a monster as a RB receiver. It is way more likely that he'll heal and be near 100% by December 31st than it is that Corum will heal and return for TCU. We already saw how Weiss/Moore adapted M's offensive scheme and play calling v. OSU and Purdue. Impressive. It's a plus-up for M v all future opponents that this offensive coaching staff seems to have Corum's absence adequately replaced by Edward's straight ahead speed and the judicious use of McCarthy's RO legs to make up for Corum's absence in the run game.
For me, I'm not worried about Corum not playing the next game or the next should M prevail v. TCU.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
I think some of that Corum speculation is wishful thinking. Fans are hoping there might be a window of opportunity for him to come back, but I don't think its realistic. If his procedure was as Jeff describes, with screws going into bone, he's NOT going to be anywhere near ready to play on December 31. And, I have a nagging feeling that he's done with Michigan anyway. He'll be working toward getting into the NFL. I doubt he'll be 100% for the combine, but it may not matter.
I don't always roll a joint, but when I do, its usually my ankle
I gotta say, HARBAUGH!!!! having absolutely zero inkling to sit out Mazi Smith at all is one of the surest signs that he's about to or already has joined the elite. Gotta be committed to winning!
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]? Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.
