What my post pertained to is the incessant hand wringing that infects M football fans conditioned to shit football from about 2003.
New era.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
Michigan gains a lot of yards between the 20s, but is not good in the Red Zone. JJ has to get better with Red Zone TDs and long passes. If Michigan turns the ball over and has stupid penalties it's going to be a long night. This is no trap game, Michigan has had this game circled for a year. No excuses - Michigan is the better team, but this game is rarely won on paper.
Sparty will bring their best effort of the year. Its their last chance to be relevant this season.
Sparty can't play man ball with Michigan. They don't have the horses. Under Dumbtonio, they could play smash mouth but not anymore.
I still expect a lot of gadgety/gimmicky stuff from them on offense, because they can't run straight at Michigan, and they're not going to be able to throw with any continued success against M's front seven. It will have to be quick reads, slants, and screens. Once M has that covered, its over.
I see an uncomfortable game for M fans early, but as the game progresses, M will shut down whatever Sparty tries to do. M has been a strong 2nd half team since last year. No opponent has had a strong 2nd half against M this year. Minter has made good adjustments at the half.
Key will be the run game. If M establishes Corum and Edwards, it will be a blowout. If MSU stuffs that, and dares McCarthy to throw, he'll do just that. McCarthy is getting better. He has shown no signs of regression, unlike so many M quarterbacks in the 2000's.
I'd like to see a 62-3 ass kicking. I probably won't get it, so its probably going to be more like 36-13.
I agree about fans expecting too much. This team is not built for blow outs necessarily. They see an OSU team continually blow out Sparty, but they continually have receivers run open 20 yards behind everyone. Their scheme is built for a blow out. HARBAUGH!! schemes pretty close to the vest. They were only up by 3 at HT over PS but were dominating the LOS. Jimmy would rather physically outman a team than put up a lot of glamor points.
Watching BTN this morning. They do these personal stories. They're actually pretty good. They did one on the two key players that were involved in recovery of a muffed punt in the 2017 game that was subsequently run back for a TD to close out an MSU win in AA with a walk off touch down. It was a bit painful watching that over and over again. The two key MSU players were Miller and Watts. Miller knocked the ball out of O'neil's hands after he picked it up off the turf right into Watt's hands who then ran it in. Watts actually broke his hip on that play when his team mates piled up on him in the EZ.
The score before the muffed punt was 23-21 M, there was 54 seconds left at the snap and the game had been tightly contested throughout. The Dantanio coached MSU team was good. They finished 2nd in the BTE behind osu and were 5-1 in the BTE, 10-2 overall. In the last 7 games played in AA, MSU is 5-2. We've already had this discussion. The MSU record of 10-4 in the last 14 games played between these two teams was achieved because MSU was close to or better than Michigan.
In the 13 year period after LC retired, Michigan sucked. They went 93/60, barely above .500, with 10 of M's losses to MSU. Horrible. No wonder there is hand wringing among M fans wrt the game today. Losing to MSU is baked in to their psyche. Analytics, usually good by this time of the season in predicting outcomes, suggests this may be the biggest spread in those analytics between MSU and M since MSU started beating M 13 years ago on the regular. M, analytically and to me, in the eyeball test, is significantly better than MSU in 2022. Player and unit match-ups clearly favor M. That does not mean shit can't happen but I think that factor in M's losses to MSU has become outsized and exaggerated in its importance in determining the game's outcome.
M will win this game and I don't think MSU is going to keep it close.
