Clete Blakeman...NFL referee...has done numerous playoff games and a couple Super Bowls is a former Husker QB...started his officiating career in the Big 8...and actually did a few UNL games back in the day...I'm not in favor of a guy with such ties doing games for his former school...in fact probably should not even being doing conference games...IMHO...when I was looking to go FBS in officiating I did not even consider doing Big 12 games...which is why I went MWC then did Pac 12 for my final few years on the field. We have always been asked if we have any conflicts of interest when doing our game/season contracts with the conference...hell they even ask that for NFHS officials...I know in Nebraska to apply for playoff games you must list those conflicts on your application as well. To be honest...I have done games in the past...mostly HS...but a couple of college games (Div II) where I felt I had some conflict...but really guys I know would go out of their way to prove their impartiality...hell if you look at the UNL games Blakeman did...he didn't do ys any favors I can tell you. But just the appearance of a conflict is not good and guys should recuse themselves from such situations.

I did the same thing, Wiz. In Michigan you are supposed to list any schools that you have a conflict of interest with, when you apply for playoff consideration. I listed my old HS and two schools in my area where my kids and my brothers attended. But I also know of several people who never listed anything, even though we all knew they should have. For me, I didn't WANT to work games involving my old HS. If anything, I probably would have been tougher on them, because I hated the school.
IMO, it would have been a lot better for appearance sake, for the four Ohio officials assigned to the 2016 game in Columbus, to graciously decline to work the game, and request to work elsewhere that day. And IMO again, it was silly for the conference to offer them in the first place. Surely there had to be an available crew of 8 with no ties to either school to work that game. But, in all their wisdom, they sent those guys anyway.
Its an argument that I'm never going to win in here. But I stand by what I believe.

Back in the late 80's I was called to be a sub for a crew doing a playoff game involving my old high school...the crews white hat got sick so the state called me to fill in...I disclosed my conflict...but since my kids at the time were living with their Mom in another city and did not attend the school...and I was graduated by about 7 years I recall...they said they were ok with it. I wish I would have said no. Half the people in attendance were calling out to me by name because they knew me...not good...the coaching staff were friends of mine...and I'm sure their opponent saw this (which is why you don't "chum" with people before the game). The game was a blowout but I never really felt comfortable. Had a similar situation when I was an RMAC official (Rocky Mountain Athletic...DII) doing a UN-Kearney game...my alma mater...after that I just decided it wasn't worth doing such games. I can't believe in a high profile league like the B1G they would allow that. Nothing good can come from it.Shut the fuck up Donny!

I posted this here because it does apply to the upcoming MSU game but it is from the PSU Defensive UFR. It's interesting because I thought Minter has been making in-game adjustments a lot more than Macdonald ever did. According to Alex Drain, who does the UFRs at mgo now, it has its downsides ..... JMO but I didn't see any downsides. Proof is in the puccing:
What does it mean for Michigan State and beyond?
Minter is more into college crappe than his predecessor and nobody noticed. Last year this time I was saying Macdonald puts his players in positions to succeed more than he looks for really clever ways to genius plays to death. Minter is doing some unsound things that make his players look like geniuses. This was a defensive coordinating masterpiece…and nobody could tell until the tape. If only it wasn't against a guy Doug Nussmeier once out-gamed.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

Apparently the bettors still haven’t learned.
Take the points. The UM- MSU game is still the UM-MSU game and the two teams are not further apart than they were in 2016, 2003, or 2004.
I’m telling you fuckers — even John L Smith’s teams were a bitch to play. MSU wildly overachieving against UM has been as predictable as UM losing to OSU.
