  • Acceptable unless the 7 points against involves a pair of safeties from the Hawaii defense.

I'm looking for more points than 58. 58 would be disappointing, knowing what we know about Hawaii.

Candy scored 63 on them. Elon outgained Candy.

He and McDonald have worked together on the Ravens, so the transition to Minter has been fairly seamless. Minter didn't have to come in and restructure everything. He's just picked up where McDonald left off. I think he has a good future as well. Hopefully with Michigan for a long time.

                • The early returns on the Minter story tell a more impactful story on Jim Harbaugh's strengths as a CFB HC: his organizational skills being translated into on-field performance. I think I could find other examples of great hires during Harbaugh's HC tenure overshadowed by the 2 season failure of the Don Brown hire and to a lesser extent the Gatis hire. Good starts, terrible finishes. The Minter hire looks to me like a long term plan to tap into NFL level coaching talent that started with the hire of Mike Macdonald and a planned transition a year later to Jesse Minter.

2021 was a great example of a roster devoid of 5* talent compared to the elites bringing a BT championship and CFP appearance home to Michigan. Detractors will say, yeah, but Michigan under Harbaugh will never compete for NCs. The UGA loss is proof of that, they'll say. That may be but it's easier to detract from what JH has built at M in terms of a well oiled football organization that develops players and produces winning on field performances than give credit to this quirky HC who has flirted with the NFL. I think for Michigan football dubters and detractors, the organizational skill that Harbaugh possesses wrt to the extent to which they have an impact on the football teams success is under rated.

                  • It's actually pretty easy to assess HARBAUGH!!!! fairly. Whether you can, of course, is a different story. But, if you're well-pleased with 1 win over Ohio State in 7 seasons and 1 B10 championship in 7 seaons, then I guess.

What has finally changed...FINALLY changed is (a) the QB Whisperer finally has good QB play; and (b) Don Brown's idiocy was removed. Belatedly and, by some accounts, forced. But, whatever.

What remains 100% fact is that M fans have adjusted expectations DOWNWARD since his hiring and they remain downward.

                    • I mean, Minter MAY be a good hire. I really don't know. But, what I do know is that it's wildly optimistic and truly fanboy-ish to conclude anything from M's horrific slate of OoC teams. Maryland may actually be a credible offense so that could be a useful benchmark. Iowa, of course, will not be.

                      • Having an 11-0 team squaring off against ohio, on the TV screen in front of me, at noon on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, is the proof required to determine if Harbaugh is a "great" coach. He proved that he could design and manage a way to bring down ohio last season. It was no small feat- but he needs to prove that less epic tasks- like beating Sparty- don't trip him up.

                        • Let's be fair. The Urban to CRD transition resulted in the hiring by CRD of Kerry Coombs who managed an osu defense in 2021, his first year in that position, that was probably the worst osu defense in a decade (I'd check but talent will do that for us). He was god awful as talent, himself has attested to. 42 points to HARBAUGH!! and the first osu loss to a Michigan team in 12 tries. Wow.

Coombs relieved Greg Mattison who retired in 2020 who did produce stout OSU defenses even though he had a history of being an opportunistic traitor. Like Minter at M, early returns on current and new osu DC Jim Knowles is encouraging. ND's offense sucks so not sure how much we can take from that opening osu win. But talent has pointed out at least the LBs were doing LB things. Will CRD continue to demonstrate his poor organizational skills with the hiring of Jim Knowles in a last ditch effort for osu's D to disable Harbaugh's death star when M comes to c-bus in November? Time will tell.

                            • This is from Gerdman's Michigan Monday:

Cade McNamara doesn’t scare defenses. JJ McCarthy does. The problem is that McCarthy may also scare Jim Harbaugh, which is maybe why they have him run the ball as much as he throws it. That needs to change on Saturday against Hawaii. If he is scrambling even more than four or five times, that’s a concern. He should be able to stand in the pocket and either find open receivers or throw them open.

This may be the most insightful post on the trash heap of dumb or worthless comments about "the QB competition." We has one and we have a head coach smart enough to let both of them start a game to strut thier stuff and prove they can throw the ball accurately, not do stupid things and lead the team to TDs. Cade graded out at a D, IMO.... maybe even just barely not getting an F. JJ still has to demonstrate he can do more than run a good RPO or RO. You can stretch the field throwing to M's receivers, Wilson in partiuclar but I suspect Bell is going to show out in the next two games you can carve up defenses with M's TEs and slots running all over the place in the short and midfield areas. That absolutely has to be in JJ's repertoire Saturday night. If it is, the QB controversey ends.
