Any coach that can coach his team into the Super Bowl is an excellent coach. The Detroit Lions haven't found one yet, and the Super Bowl has been in existence for over 50 years.

He's had a lot of letdowns at Michigan, and hasn't lived up to his pre-hiring hype. Most of us expected him to slap Nick in the face a few times by now. On those counts, he's failed.

I am actually still upset with him for flirting with the NFL. He needs to forget that.

When I think of all the idiots who could be occupying the HC office at Michigan right now, I think I'm fairly satisfied with Harbaugh.

And I know. The first rule of this forum is to mock Harbaugh incessantly. I mean, what else is a Michigan forum for?

Let me wait for a few losses this year, and I'll join in that chorus again.

Sure. And now that five minutes is over. And I’m bracing to be sucker punched in the balls again by my team, as per the routine.

Harbaugh used to be an excellent coach. He hasn’t been at UM. There is a possibility though that the old Harbaugh has been revived. I’ll entertain that possibility if we win the conference again this year or at least end up 11-1 with one close loss.

Covid saved HARBAUGH!!!! in a lot of ways. But his 2020 team was going to be bad regardless of Covid or not. That's his 6th year. And he produced a really bad team. Fortunately, that gets mostly brushed aside.

He is not a great CFB coach. I do think the explosion of the transfer portal may enable him to paper over recruiting issues, though. But, at the end of the day, his ceiling is a B10 Championship. He'll never produce truly elite teams.

Fortunately for him, UFM left Ohio State and CRD and his clownshow is there. So, he should beat Ohio State more than once every 7 years. So the future in B10 play looks good. But, man -- 1 in 7 years. That's not good.

A B1G championship gets you to the playoff most years. That's a great ceiling. Last year was a great year. Even taking into account that one of our two losses was to MSU. If he gets there again this year then I might thaw out a bit (but he does need to beat MSU).

Well, he's gonna be 11-0 going into Columbus. That's a given. If OSU slips up twice then he's in the CFP regardless. And he'll probably beat CRD anyway.

With the expansion coming, if M is good then OSU and M will more often than not play two consecutive weeks with both teams making the 12-team playoff. I don't think M has a realistic chance of winning that, but at least they'd win a game or maybe 2 in the expanded playoff.

But, that's what it's gonna be. "The Game" will be a prelude to "THE GAME" which will be a prelude to both teams playing in the playoffs.

We'll just have to disagree about 2020.

The conference itself is to blame for the results that year as much as Harbaugh is. The "We're going to play ... well, no we're not .... ok maybe a limited schedule, .. no, we're not playing in the fall .... oops, yes we are ... "

That approach killed Michigan as much as anything. Back then nobody knew how to treat Covid. Politics was allowed to dictate what happened to the Big Ten. It was a cluster, from just the administrative point of view. And according to conference 'standards', Michigan didn't have enough players that were considered 'well' to finish the season.

I get the gripe from OSU. I get it. Understood. They were in line for a massive score victory over M, maybe as high as the 80's.

But M was stopped just as much by conference idiocy, as they were by Covid.

but of course we know the REAL reason was Harbaugh didn't want to play in Columbus ... yep yep yep

                            anyway

I think 2021 was a nice recovery. The season the players put together was the finest effort since 1997. Nobody can ever take that away from them. They got rolled by Georgia but so did everyone else they played. Georgia was better.

2022 has promise, but there's a long way to go.

Right. Covid is the perfect excuse for how bad the 2020 team was. If one were to peruse the 2020 threads there wasn't a lot of "it's ok, it's a covid season" talk. There was a lot, e.g., "Harbaugh needs to go after Ohio State beats him by 60" talk.

It's amazing what 2021 and the strong desire to forget and forgive will do. But, make no mistake, the 2020 team was not good. Covid or otherwise.

Covid also prevented CRD from taking a hard look at Coombs. We should have known in 2020 that his scheme was a shitshow because it was. But, we didn't get enough games and UAT was super good, so, ok...but I feel confident Coombs would been out after 2020 if they had played a full season.
