  • This is fantastic. NCAA: If you don't stop making fun of us, we'll suspend your client.

Mars' tweets are worth the click.

The NCAA threatened to suspend former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh last fall if his attorney did not halt his satirical social media comments of the association's ongoing investigation of the Wolverines football program.

In a "letter of admonition" to attorney Thomas Mars obtained by CBS Sports, current NCAA Committee on Infractions chair Dave Roberts wrote in October 2023 that if Mars didn't halt his posts criticizing the NCAA's investigative process "the COI will consider appropriate penalties, including immediate suspension of your client."

The letter ends with seemingly a final warning from Roberts that read, "There will not be any further admonitions …"

Mars did not respond to the NCAA and continued his critical posts but it seems Roberts took no further action.

Mars also said at one point the NCAA demanded all of Harbaugh's texts and emails for the last 2 ½ years. That request included all personal emails, Mars said. He requested the NCAA limit the scope of the request to Michigan athletics but was told no. The NCAA wanted in 24 hours what Mars said were 6,199 emails and at least that number of texts.

"At which point I said, 'OK, you're not getting any of them … ,' " Mars told CBS Sports. "It's an invasion not even the Justice Department is allowed to do."

    • I'm going to break radio silence on this subject just to make a couple comments

First, the "fine" imposed by the NCAA is the result of their temper tantrum regarding Harbaugh's failure to admit to his crimes. They can't touch him for anything else, so they slap the University with the fine in their lame attempt to get even. Truth be known, some alumni will pay that fine so that the athletic department doesn't get nicked for it.

Is there any remaining question regarding the childishness of the NCAA? The "crimes" committed by Michigan ARE, what we knew what they were, all along, in spite of what the NCAA pooh-bah said earlier, "its about more than just a hamburger". Yeah, right. Okay, it was about a Zoom call were one or more assistants watched some players practice from the football building. How horrible. Really bad stuff there.

So, on this case, no loss of scholarships, no vacating of games or titles, just a loss of some official visits both at the school and in the players homes. And, of course the "waaahhhh" along with the 3 year probation. Really bad stuff there.

So, we now move forward to the next case. "Spy-gate". That's the one that the haters are drooling about. They'll be disappointed.

Okay .. enough for me. I'll save Wiz the time here and I'll voluntarily "shaddup"

        • Football was actually played today and M's Spring Game was televised on Fox sports. Of course, everyone was great and M will repeat as NC. That's typical biased over analysis. The structure was Blue (1s) v. Maze 2's playing four running clock quarters. By the 3rd quarter subbing diluted that structure. 4 QBs got extended play. Edwards carried Orgi for a pretty nice looking opening drive to take a 7 - 0 lead and that's the last you saw of him as he was a cheerleader on the sidelines the rest of the way. There were 11 plays on that drive with 6 runs, and 5 passes.

It wasn't individual plays that struck me. It was that this was a hard hitting, no holds barred game - except can't hit the QB (who was in white) or return punts. You could hear the hitting. It was real and Klatt was surprised M was structuring the practice like it did. He commented the Sherrone's trademark "SMASH" approach to offense was clearly evident. The players on both sides of the ball were very aggressive. I saw some Don Brown in Wink's D. The D got burned on aggressive blitz packages - supposedly a Martindale trademark - defense modeled after the Raven's defense and a little more blitzy, IMO than Minter's.

There will be some better takes than mine at mgo and the link below does a good job of summarizing the game with more player names than I can properly identify.

Team Maize defeated Team Blue by a score of 17-7 at today's 2024 edition of the Michigan Football spring game. A game that was preceded by the championship ring ceremony and had numerous departed heroes strolling the sideline, the focus on the field was instead on a number of young players trying to make a name for themselves. As in past years, I'm not going to give a play-by-play recap for an exhibition game, but instead will give you a batch of instant reaction takes on what we witnessed:  OffenseAlex Orji's potential... and areas for improvement. Orji quarterbacked the first drive for Team Blue, as well as the last, with  intermittent snaps in between. In that time we saw some good and some bad from Orji. He varied his touch on throws that showed a decent understanding of quarterbacking, but was mostly throwing checkdown passes. The final drive in particular saw the defense back off (Team Maize had a 10 point lead), ceding the underneath routes and Orji was efficient in connecting on those. But that's what you'd expect any QB at this level to be able to do, so I'm not putting much stock in that. However, there were more tantalizing moments. Orji delivered a pass to Max Bredeson with good zip and then sensed pressure before scrambling for a touchdown on the first drive. He also seemed to have another touchdown scramble on the last drive, but it was overturned on a questionable "sack" (the referees blew the play dead in rather dubious fashion). The athleticism and the ability to hit the easy stuff was on display but there were concerning moments. He put a ball behind Tyler Morris on the first drive and forced a laser into double coverage looking for Zack Marshall on the last drive. Orji also showed good pocket presence on a different snap a couple drives earlier, dancing in the pocket and eventually finding an open receiver on 3rd & 5... but he way overthrew his target. I'm not sure if the accuracy and reads are completely where they need to be, but Orji wasn't a total wreck and gave us enough reasons to believe he could plausibly be the QB in 2024. It didn't answer all the questions at the QB position, but there was enough on display to believe Orji could be a successful QB at some point in the future (whether that is in '24 or '25). Takes on the other QBs. Davis Warren was the starting QB for Team Maize and just like prior seasons, Warren looked pretty damn good. His arm talent is 100% there, which was most on display on a bomb to Kendrick Bell for a TD: 🔔🔔🔔📺 @CFBONFOX pic.twitter.com/G1jgyJAwmO— Michigan Football (@UMichFootball) April 20, 2024There were several other strikes that Warren uncorked and he may well have been the most impressive QB today. However, it does feel a little difficult to take all of it seriously because Warren has looked terrific in spring games prior too, which hasn't necessarily translated to regulation games. Jayden Denegal was a bit of a disappointment in this one I felt. His drives for Team Maize had some moments, but ultimately left a lot to be desired. Yes he did hit a bomb to Fred Moore, but he also threw a wretched interception to DJ Waller (which was punched out and recovered as a fumble), threw a ball that was batted at the line, fumbled a snap that killed the two minute drill in the second quarter, and had a couple other iffy looking throws on the fourth drive. Based on the feel of this game, it would appear that Orji and Warren are the main two in-house contenders for the starting QB this fall. Jadyn Davis didn't play a ton, as expected. He threw a nice ball down the sideline for Peyton O'Leary that was PBU'd which showed off his arm talent, but he did appear to miss a wide open receiver on that very play. That was Davis' most notable moment during a short afternoon and based on today I would expect him to redshirt this fall (nothin' wrong with that). [AFTER THE JUMP: more takes]

Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

Michigan is too smart to rely on using permanent signals. I did manage to see a smattering of Sparty and osu jackets. Obvious spies- and not very good ones.

Is the glare from all those championship rings in your eyes? Does Nebraska even matter in the CFB world anymore? Not like they are ever going to make the Big Ten championship with 3 clear better teams joining the Big Ten and 1 (UCLA) that is on the same level.

                              • I’m eternally grateful for that time some guy texted a recruit during the Covid lockdown and some other guy watched 7 on 7 drills over Zoom. Four years later: National Champions.

Now everyone has the formula. You’re welcome, America.
