            • For better or worse, he's Michigan's to keep. He says his interest in the NFL is over. I guess we'll see if this is a good or bad thing.

                • Gattis is leaving for Miami... Liked the direction the offense was heading under him, and really wanted to see what he could do with McCarthy at QB and skill talent at both WR & RB.

Filling both coordinators spots is a strong hint at an underperforming squad in '22; defense took huge hits in attrition and is looking to fill the coordinator position too.

                  • That may open the door for Mike Hart to become OC. He may not have enough experience, but unless Harbaugh can snag someone with experience, Hart might be the best choice from within.

                    • Sam Webb expects Matt Weiss (QB coach) to be promoted to OC.

                      • I'm not a huge Gattis fan. I think McDonald is a bigger loss. BUT, I do think Gattis is a loss. I do think Gattis is better suited to maximize McCarthy and Edwards than HARBAUGH!!!! However, I also think you can find an OC that is on par with Gattis easier than you can find a DC on par with McDonald.

Now, maybe McDonald benefited from a unicorn situation on the DL, but he instantly turned that defense into something that was not a trainwreck and, in fact, solid. Gattis took a few years to get the offense functioning at its best and, for that matter, like 12 7-year starters on the OL. Heh.

Anyway, I'd be super excited if this meant HARBAUGH!!!! was back to really running the offense (and that may have never changed). But, I suspect he'll find someone decent.

Re: McDonald -- CRD's best hire was a strong NFL position coach to be DC. Hafley knew what the fuck he was doing and, of course, he had several ridiculously good players. His next hire was easily his worst and that, coupled with the loss of guys like Chase Young, Okudah and Jordan Fuller turned the defense from a real strength into a complete fucking shitshow of soul-destroying embarrassment. So, I'm predisposed to think it's harder to find a good DC than a good OC, but, again, I watched Ohio State play, e.g., Oregon, Tulsa and M this year, So, yeah....that was horrific.

                        Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.

                          • A lot of things could be at work here. Could be that Gattis knows that M isn't going to be all-in on NIL, so he wanted to get with a school that will be all in. Makes recruiting easier. Maybe he missed working in the south, where recruiting is easier for southern schools, or maybe he just wanted to leave the frozen tundra's of Michigan. Whatever it is, its a tough loss, because M was just starting to get some continuity in coaching, and now two of the guys who were most responsible for the good things in '21 have moved on.

                            • I'm also wondering if he had designs on the M Head Coach job, and then when Harbaugh didn't leave, he decided to move on. Maybe he thinks his chances of moving into a HC spot is going to be better served in SEC territory. Miami isn't in the SEC, but he'll be smack in the middle of their recruiting territory. Hard to believe that a lateral move would be that attractive unless weather and/or upward mobility is involved. Miami isn't a better job than U-M

                              • Ouch. Sucks. Sure Gattis had his reasons…. Harbaugh was going to leave the program anyways. There’s something more to this that is wrong with the Michigan administration considering Harbaugh, MacDonald, and Gattis wanted to leave this offseason. I think NIL is part of it.
I think Gattis will be offered a HC job for a low tier SEC program soon.

Promoting Weiss isn’t “crazy” though… as Andrel Anthony suggests. Crazy would be bringing in Tom Brady or Colin Kaepernick to the staff.
