I get why not Hart, but if there's going to be a hire from within, why Gattis? The same argument applies to him as applies to Harbaugh -- previous years' failures aren't completely erased by this year's success. It could be that Gattis is a brilliant offensive mind who has had to remake himself according to the constraints of his HC. Or it could be that he's just not that good at it, and let's not forget those years in which Warinner was called in midseason to make the running game make sense, one of which was Gattis' first year here.
Maybe it's not Hart it's Bellamy, if they're going to hire from within. Everyone adores Bellamy.
Obviously none of these guys have an appropriate resume, so I do agree with Hannibal that if Harbaugh leaves you do a search. But then I recall what an utter gong show it is when Michigan is looking for a football coach, and want none of that humiliation. At this point I'd rather do what it takes to keep Harbaugh here through McCarthy's career rather than gamble McCarthy's career on an unproven HC. Jim won't be too old for the NFL in two years.
Hart may be a viable candidate for a HC job in the near future but not at a blue blood program. IF Harbaugh were to leave for the NFL, Gattis is the no-brainer hire. I’m not sure he’s really all that great but Hack is spot on re: Michigan coaching searches. Maintain continuity and see how it goes.
Also of note, 8 of the last 9 Broyles Award winners are now head coaches and most of them are at major programs. The only one who isn’t is Joe Brady who went to the NFL. Lots of household names on that list. Narduzzi, Venables, Riley, Smart, Malzahn…
I'd agree with that sentiment. Obviously we don't know the nature of discussions between his agent and any given NFL team's reps. But there's enough anecdotal evidence from NFL sources that suggests talk between the two are going on.
That reliable sources have reported M has offered a new contract and it appears it has not been accepted (signed) supports the view that Harbaugh wants to hear what the NFL has to say. Keep in mind he HAS a contract with M and it is signed by both sides. The contract discussions involve a new one that would replace the exiting one - the new one is the one that apparently remains offered but not yet accepted.
There were comments late last week that also suggest that Jim appearing to hold out has nothing to do with M's approach to NIL, admissions of transfers via the portal or money. People who do reasonably speculate believe Harbaugh's failure to make a decision on which way he wants to go (assuming he has choices) is based on things that are most important to him - family.
Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.
It sort of seems to me that he wants an NFL offer and that ain’t forthcoming.
That presumes he's intentionally planning to fuck over the 2021/22 HS recruits he's already got in the fold and the '23 class he and his coaching staff are working on. Not to mention blowing out of the water his relationships with HS coaches and established pipelines who he's been working with over the past 7y.
I'm not dismissing your view. It has merit. Screwing recruits and players by making a previously unannounced decision to bolt for the NFL is just not in his character, at least the one I understand it to be. .

Well, any jump to the NFL is going to do that. And, yet, you were at various times thinking there was at least a substantial likelihood of him leaving. So, whatever,
If he doesn’t have an NFL offer he has to keep doing his job until he does. I don’t think he’s sitting on an offer. I think he’s hoping one comes and then he’ll decide—like any other CFB coach who has ever jumped to the NFL. Including HARBAUGH!!!!
Anyway, he’ll be back. I’m glad.
Dan Patrick: What was your reaction to [Urban Meyer being hired]? Brady Hoke: You know.....not....good.
If Harbaugh wants to go to the NFL, all he has to do is tell his agent to start looking around and spreading the word. If a team wants him, he'll have an offer. If he were to put out the word that he wants a serious offer that he can accept, I think he'd have a deal within 48 hours.
I think what he is actually DOING is staying deliberately ambiguous in order to get Michigan to give him an offer that makes it harder for them to fire him. I think he doesn't want a repeat of off season 2020/21. So the "idea" that he "might" leave is a tool for him to get what he really wants, which is a long term, secure offer from Michigan.
If Michigan farts around, and doesn't give him the security he wants, then he may make the call to his agent and put out the word that he's willing to leave.
I'm getting the impression that NIL isn't going to be a problem. Especially now that Schlissel is gone. MSC will not stand in the way of that. In fact, she may be the Jim Hackett of University presidents. She'll want Michigan to be in the thick of things with NIL. She wasn't the problem when she was here before.
Harbaugh isn't leaving. I'm glad he isn't as well. I think he's finally got a good mix of coaches, and I think he's getting athletes that can make Michigan competitive in the Big Ten race for years to come. OSU won't get any more walkover wins. They'll have to play a real game from now on. CRD isn't going to "hang 100" on Harbaugh, .. ever.

The Sam Webb types are pretty sure there's not a ton of NFL interest, or that he would be the top candidate of the teams that do have interest. Makes a shortlist for the Raiders, sure, but maybe not more than that.
