  • It's not a moonshot hire (Foote would have been that) but probably low transition costs as has run the same defense as Macdonald. The big ask is whether he has the analytics down like Macdonald did to adapt his defenses to 2022 opponents that he was noted for in 2021. He's going to get a very good secondary from MM but a diminished pass rush. Well disguised and plentiful blitzing can overcome that.

    Work in progress.

Pete Thamel had it first, it’s already posted on the premium sites, and I’ve got a few people who DM me who’ve said the same thing, so I guess we can report it: Michigan has hired Vanderbilt defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to the same role at Michigan, replacing one-year Ravens rental Mike Macdonald. Sources: Michigan is expected to hire Vanderbilt’s Jesse Minter as the school’s new defensive coordinator. He’s a former Ravens assistant who brings experience in defensive system. — Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) February 8, 2022 Minter is more or less Macdonald, IE a longtime Baltimore Ravens assistant who relies on modern analytics, except instead of no coordinating experience, Minter has more of it than almost anyone his age, and was in charge of an SEC defense last year. Mission to CFB's National Championship accomplished. But the shine on the NC Trophy is embarrassingly wearing off. It's M B-Ball ..... or hockey or volley ball or name your college sport favorite time ...... until next year.

    • I think this is a brotherly payback from John, putting Jim onto a guy who has the same knowledge and experience as MM. "Hey, sorry I took back your/my DC, but here's another guy who might be just as good". And, he gets rescued from Vanderbilt into a much better program. I hope it works out.

I haven't heard much about who may be in the running for the OC. A stupid suggestion I heard was Tom Brady. Yeah, .. Tom wants to go back to Ann Arbor to work as Jim's assistant. I doubt Gisele would like that idea. Giving up a beach front home in Clearwater to come to Ann Arbor? Yeah, right.

      • That write up seems a little optimistic calling it the perfect hire.

        • I think the mgo author does a good job of justifying that characterization. The one weak spot is the sort-of glossing over of Minter's preceding stint as DC for the Commodores. Not good. In context, understandable. Other that that his record has been good.

I thought the stark difference between Don Brown and MM was that Brown was exceedingly rigid. He put players in impossible positions then wondered why M's D got smoked. MM was better at adjusting his defense to the opponent and seemed to have a feel for getting the right players in schemes and positions to succeed.

We don't know if Minter is as good at that as MM was. It's also going to be hard to compare them with both Hutchinson and Ojabo gone to the NFL. Minter is going to have a different mix of talent than MM had.

          • Lots (re: Minter) of experience coordinating the same defense at the college level as MM. Hasn't ever really had much talent to coach, will be a transition year in terms of talent for the defense so we need to be patient. Defense will give up yards, points in '22.

            • How does this new coaching staff stand up to the old one?

Minter feels like a bit more of a known commodity than coach Mac was. Minter has coordinator experience and grew up with a great coach and football family. Minter was also a recruiting coordinator at his prior stops.

Elston is a clear upgrade from Nua. His recruiting chops should pay dividends for Michigan

Bellamy seems natural to slide over to WR

Newsome is an unknown at TE coach and JayBaugh is an unknown at the safety spot. Jay would seem to have a ton of help with Clink and Minter over there. This tight end room with a 6 year senior and All and Schoon returning.

The 4 headed horseman of play callers could be a problem. It seems Moore, Weiss, and Hart seem to have a heavy run game focus, how does our passing game fit in to what they do.

Sherrone Moore – Sanford Robertson Co-Offensive Coordinator/Donald C. Graham Offensive Line Coach
              Matt Weiss – Sanford Robertson Co-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks
              Ron Bellamy – Wide Receivers
Mike Hart – Run Game Coordinator/Running Backs
              Grant Newsome – Tight Ends
Jay Harbaugh – Special Teams Coordinator/Safeties

                    • We won't know a thing until they get an entire season under their belts.

My feeling is on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being Saban-esque, I'd put Harbaugh's recovery of the coaching staff to be around a 6.0. His dalliance with the NFL cost him an opportunity to grab even better replacements, but the guys he's come up with are not bad. The most hurtful loss was MM, and Minter seems to have the credentials to possibly pick up where MM left off. IMO, Gattis was never a really good fit with Harbaugh in the personality department. Only time will tell if Gattis is the diamond in the rough many think he is, or if he's just another Don Brown.

                            • I didn't realize that Beckmann was the voice of Michigan football for 33 years. Didn't seem like that long.

WJR personality who retired last year has been suffering from vascular dementia, a rare and untreatable brain disease, relatives told The Detroit News.

                              • Back when I was just starting out as a terrified intern at WJR, he was in the midst of yelling at Chuck Swirsky for something and I guess I must have been a bit slack-jawed because he winked at me mid-sentence.
