Actually it's a lot more blatant, from a strictly competitive advantage point of view. Three (or maybe more) universities ganging up on one by sharing playcalling intelligence is a lot more contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship and a level playing field than one guy doing in person what could have been legally done with a few random dudes who have cell phones.

I've already seen the Mars letter. The important point in it is that Mars suggests that Harbaugh may sue Petittie and the Big for defamation. Here's what he'd have to prove, assuming the Big actually issues a suspension.

1. Someone made a statement;
2. The statement was published;
3. The statement caused you injury;
4. The statement was false; and.
5. The statement did not fall into a privileged category.
