He has been an excellent OL coach, but being a great head coach is an entirely different thing. IMHO he has to cut his teeth being an OC for a lot longer or by getting a head coaching job at a non power 5 school.

    • Yeah. Mel Tucker is a good example. He was an excellent defensive assistant coach. Head coach results are not great.

The NCAA in (most) if not all cases will hit Michigan with harsher penalties next year. Warde giving him the suspension still in fear of the NCAA - like they have power or something? While everybody else tells the NCAA to fuck off, if you come after us we are taking you to court, then they back off.
IMO, the NCAA is an illegitimate organization as it pertains to football. They don't run the championship tournament, they don't negotiate TV contracts - the conferences do, they don't run conference championship games, they tried to keep athletes from cashing in on their NIL and the Supreme Court, by a 9-0 vote, told them to pound sand, and I'm pretty sure the conferences hire, train, and pay the officials. In fact...

There is absolutely no reason - NONE -that a major CFB program should be kneeling before the NCAA. Wings has it right, tie the shit up in courts for a couple years. The NCAA is a dying entity and that should be everyone's playbook. Bleed them dry through the courts every time they get too big for their britches.

          • I mean -- the NCAA is legitimate. It exists only as long as the participants allow it to exist. It's not an overlord imposed on participants. The schools have total agency.

The NCAA rules are nonsense and the entire veneer of amatuerism has been outdated for decades. But, that's what the SCHOOLS WANTED.

As far as HARBAUGH!!!!! goes, I dunno if the NFL would take him, but I definitely feel like if he can leave he will. This is best chance to win something and the cliff is coming at him fast. Barring a massive portal offseason, they're going to fall considerably.

            • The NCAA gets its power from the University Presidents. They sign an agreement with the association and agree to let it and the conference offices manage the sport.

Kneecapping the NCAA has to start with the university presidents and most university presidents don’t care as long as donors don’t get pissed.

University presidents also like being seen as pro academics and view athletics as a beast to be kept in a cage. Never be shocked when a university’s administrators side with the NCAA and punish their own program or coach for alleged wrongdoing.

              • The NCAA has been in "Whack-A-Mole" mode since the 1960's. It is an absolute joke. The punishments, investigatory practices and "rules" are arbitrary as fuck and only exist for the optics and illusion of amateurism. CFB needs to break away and just run an independent entity...but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

                • And you don’t usually get a lot of support from conference mates when the NCAA does some crazy shit.

Your conference mates are saying things like:

“Well, where was their support when we got in trouble?!”

“Haha! Serves those pompous cheating bastards right! I’m ecstatic they’re getting kicked in the jibs!”

”Hey, I bet we can use this with negative recruiting!”

                    • The Universities want the NCAA to exist because, as Alabam"Alum" alluded to, it gives the illusion of control and order. It gives the illusion of academic priorities. Or at least it DID. So whether it was wack-a-mole or not -- and it was and is a capricious orgranization -- it was the appearance that mattered. And that's what the SCHOOLS wanted.

The end is nigh, though. The SEC and B10 will eventually partner and agree to some sort of rules. And once those two behemoths leave, then the NCAA is dead.

The illusions Presidents were chasing are now fully well and dead with NIL and the Portal. They'll move on, but it'll take time.

                      • 10 years or so the NCAA wrt football will be perhaps gone or at least mostly irrelevant..I mean everyone but the presidents view it as irrelevant now...the NCAA just wanted HARBURGER!!!!!!! to be apologetic and kiss their rumps...had he done that it would have been long over and a slap on the wrist...but that isn't who HARBURGER!!!!!!! is...much like DJT he is a "fuck you" kinda guy...

An old boss of mine used to tell me "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar"...well...HARBURGER!!!!!!! apparently doesn't like honey...

                          • The positive news there is Harbaugh can coach during the week. Helps the development of the team long term.
M obviously starts 3-0. We can punt Burger-Gate until the offseason where Harbaugh possibly leaves. Just have to enjoy the 2023 season because there’s so much mystery with the future of the program. One last hurrah!

                            • I'm viewing 2023 as the last hurrah and it should be really good.

I ran across this survey from a year ago that ESPN conducted with 200 coaches, players and administrators regarding the future of CFB. It was interesting to read it again after the most recent round of realignment collapsed the PAC-X.

Nearly 80% of respondents believe schools will pay athletes directly within the next decade. Nearly 75% think the sport will eventually follow some sort of professional model, perhaps with schools forming conferences based on their willingness to pay players. And virtually everyone (98%) thinks more realignment is in store -- sooner than later.
                              The NCAA and governance

Nearly 60% of respondents agreed that college football should break away from the NCAA and form its own system of governance and oversight. Where to draw the lines of demarcation is far less clear, with some voices suggesting a breakaway of just FBS football (14%) -- leaving the NCAA to manage other sports and host championship events -- and others debating whether the departure should include all FBS schools or just those from Power 5 conferences (16%). Then there were those who think the NCAA is good for hosting championship events but not regulating any sports (18%). Nearly 12% of respondents said there was no need for the NCAA at all.
As for what the top level of college football should look like in the future, there was again a sharp divide in ideas. About 29% of respondents said there should be a break between the Power 5 and other FBS programs, which would all stand separately from FCS teams. Others saw value in the top-tier conferences continuing to work with Group of 5 and FCS teams (21%). More than a quarter of respondents said there should be a complete reorganization in which schools are grouped according to resources and revenue.

More than 60% of respondents said college football needs to name a czar or commissioner who could oversee all aspects of the sport and shepherd the disparate interests in a direction best for the sport as a whole.
                              Realignment and superconferences

While the majority of the survey took place before UCLA and USC announced plans to join the Big Ten, the move likely came as little surprise to the respondents, who overwhelmingly believe more realignment is on the horizon.

Indeed, when asked what college football was most likely to look like in 20 years, a sizable majority (58%) answered that, while the sport would remain tied to academics, there would be a split between superconferences that paid their athletes and smaller leagues that don't.

"Players don't get paid for their name or their image or their likeness because they're good at math," Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said. "They get paid because they're good at football. So we are in the world of professional athletics now. So now how do you manage professional athletics? Well, what did the premier league in our sport have to do to manage it? They had to have a collective bargaining group and they had to have a salary cap. If you're going to ever get your hands around it, I believe that's the way you get your hands around it. Otherwise, it's going to just be more of what's going on now, which is out of control, really."

We've already seen, since this survey was conducted a year ago, the PAC-12 lose 8 teams and implode. The pace of these changes, IMO, will be coming sooner rather than later based on the quickly shifting viewpoints on these topics. It doesn't seem that long ago that the statement "Nearly 80% of respondents believe schools will pay athletes directly within the next decade." would have been unthinkable. The onset of a professional model will bring with it a new governing body and it can't happen soon enough.

                              • They could have made CFB a different animal and the conferences for other sports could have remained intact...just had new alignments wrt football only...the biggest impact for schools isn't really going to be football travel etc...it is going to be the obscure sports wrt travel...
