I rewatched Saturday's 30-10 win over Fst yesterday and it didn't look as bad as it did live on TV. My son, Sean, was at the game and he had a similar take watching it live from the stands. Thought Davis Warren took post game criticism he didn't deserve. Did see the OL issues getting holes for Edwards and thought that was due to new guys still learning to communicate. OL play was much better in the 4th when M went into the strangle mode, Fst's D got gassed and Mullings was getting yards on the ground.

          • Moore's contract details were released yesterday. Looks like he'll be around for a while.

Michigan coach Sherrone Moore’s full employment contract protects Moore from being fired for cause for NCAA violations that occurred before the contract took effect.

Moore’s five-year contract, released Monday by the university, states that a violation of NCAA rules that occurred prior to the effective date of the deal would not be grounds for termination for cause as long as the university had “actual knowledge of the facts or alleged facts that are the basis for the violation prior to the execution of this agreement by all parties.”
The contract states Moore could be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension without pay, for violations of NCAA rules. The contract also says he could be fired for cause if the university discovers additional violations that were not disclosed prior to the signing of the deal.
The full contract, which was signed Sept. 6, calls for Moore to earn an average of $5.7 million over five years. He’s also eligible for a $500,000 retention bonus at the end of each contract year.

If Moore is fired without cause, Michigan would owe him 75 percent of the remaining value of the contract, though the buyout would be reduced if Moore finds another job. Moore would owe Michigan a $5 million buyout if he leaves voluntarily during the first year of the deal, with the amount decreasing by $1 million in each year of the contract.

            • I guess his buyout isn't too bad by today's standards. Based on $5.7M/year, if he were to completely bomb out and get fired after two years (unlikely UM would do that), they'd have to pay him $12.8 M. After 3 years it would drop to $8.5M.

              • That he was working without a contract for almost 10 months after he was named HC indicates to me that the sticking point was likely getting the U to agree to contractually preventing him from being terminated due to NCAA violations that occurred before he was named HC. Smart man.

                • Also, connecting the dots, Moore probably knows what proof exists that the NOA has legs and how the U is going to respond to it. I don't think you can conclude the U will cave or fight, but Moore seems savvy enough to protect himself whatever the U does.

                    • I don't remember a season when there was a lingering question asking what kind of football is Michigan playing and how good a job has the coaching staff done putting players in positions to succeed and win. I also don't think I've seen so many divergent takes on how good is Michigan and what changes need to be made.

On offense, there is one prominent question and two different answers for it. First question asks, is the offensive coaching staff optimizing the skill sets of Alex Orji? Or put another way, in the off-season, did the coaching staff try to make Orji into JJ and continue to run the offensive plays that were successful in 2023? One school of thought opines that this is exactly what happened. Another thinks the staff HAS implemented an Orji offense. This group believes it's a work in progress with Orgi learning on the fly. There will be more plays added to M's playbook specifically to take advantage of what Orji does best - run the college version of spread and shred with inside and outside power (Split Zone) a part of that.

Proponents of the thinking that the offensive staff tried to make Alex Orji into JJ just keeping M's 2023 playbook is not without supporting evidence. I've seen it through 4 games. Likewise, there are proponents of the view that the playbook has been optimized for Orji's skill set. They argue that it takes time for a new starting QB to get the game to slow down sufficiently to allow the QB to process what he's seeing before and after the snap. That comes with live reps. The thinking is that the staff is layering plays, introducing new ones at each week of practice working to get all the parts involved in a successful play on the same page on game day. There are video play breakdowns that clearly demonstrate new RO plays that JJ would never have been asked to run so as to preserve his body. Orji's body can run those kinds of plays and safely absorb more blows. His legs can be a threat. Not a Denard type threat but he has to be accounted for as a runner by the opposing defense.

On defense, there are lots of questions on Wink Martindale's blitzing. There's video evidence of two plays that involved blitzes v. USC that were unnecessary and resulted in big plays for USC, one of them a 63y TD run. Opinions of his coaching and play design on defense range from "FIRE WINK" to he's learning how to coach college defense, "he'll be fine."

The bottom line is that 4 games in and with 3 wins, it remains unclear how good team 144 is and whether it will progress positively. It is hard to discern how M will fare against Oregon and OSU. We do know at this point based on what we've seen in four games, the team is limited on offense, might have an overly aggressive defense that gives up big plays, and will lose to Oregon and at OSU. 10-2 is a generous ceiling with a play-off berth; 8-4 with losses to @Illinois, MSU, Oregon, @OSU is the floor with a minor or NYD bowl bid.

                      • If you haven't read Brian at mgo's UFR Offense, don't bother, I'll summarize:

M's coaching staff has no idea how to optimize Orji's skill set and have done nothing to change the playbook to do that ...... basically the offensive playbook is the same one that JJ ran in '23 and Orji is being asked to execute those same plays in '24. Brian is "confused, frustrated and angry."

I posted my take on the subject in the Gopher game thread. It acknowledges Brian's take but I'm not confused, frustrated or angry. M's offense is what it is and will continue to be a Power offense. Don't expect M to look like Army, or Navy, become an Option offense or anything in between. What you see is what you get ........POWER (and the playbook that defines it as such).

We are Iowa. Deal with it.

                          • M gets one of it's two byes this coming Saturday with a shit-ton of work to do. No, the sky is not falling but team 144 is more of a step down from last season's NC team than I thought it would be. A lot on the list of things to fix for Moore to deal with. IMO, some of it isn't fixable. It's pretty clear that the coaching staff went into planning for the 2024 season to run the same offense that JJ ran with one of three new QBs. The offensive scheme and most base plays aren't going to change. Wink is Wink. I'm not sure about his one S back there with the rest somewhere on or near the LOS. Nor am I sure he can thrive at the CFB game level being the NFL guy that he is. That isn't going to change.

Next game on the road again in Champaign v. Illinois Saturday, October 19th. If I remember, I'll post a game thread for that game next Sunday.

Well, Army is 5-0 and Navy is 5-0, so there is that.

What is wrong about this team is that the UM coaching staff totally overrated the inexperienced QBs in the QB room. We have not had competent QB play all season, and there is little prospect that it will get any better. Look at UW. They get a three-year starter from Miss St. and he is competent. Kyle McCord at Syracuse is competent. There were scores of decent QBs available after the 2023 season, and UM decided to stand pat with garbage.

It costs $ 3.0 million to hire a good QB now and I hope Dave Portnoy provides the money because it is obvious that UM is unwilling to adapt to the new way of doing things.

                              • It feels like we're back to the pre-Harbaugh days, where the UM Administration is completely fine with also-ran status in the B1G and on a national level. Harbaugh had to do everything possible, including walking on the borderlines of the rules, to make this program significant again on a national level. The administrators on State Street are seemingly just fine (once again) with getting that magic 100K in the seats, and a middling status in the B1G. They seem to think that they will sully themselves if they get out and compete with the likes of osu, Alabama, Georgia, et al by jumping into the competition of NIL and the portal. Its a "We're going to stay above all this" mentality that intends to stand pat with what they've got, and wait for others to make the decisions for them.

Michigan has become the Detroit Lions of the Russ Thomas era. Meanwhile, Jerry Jones in Columbus is throwing money around like its candy, and eating not just Michigan's lunch, but everybody else's as well.

But what do I know? I'm just a country living, trailer park trash bumpkin from rural Michigan. Michigan's decision makers could care less what I think.
